Principals' Message
Good Afternoon SCS Families and Caregivers,
“This is the best part of being a teacher!” was a perfect way to sum up Tuesday evening’s fall recital. Being able to set the stage, step back, and watch kids share their growth is an experience that fills everyone’s bucket. Watching 30+ kids doing that in a variety of musical genres - both instrumental and vocal - is a special experience every year. We’d like to give a huge thanks to our music department for building the foundation for this event. Not every teacher has the same experience, of course. To see and hear students share their growth in playing music or singing feels different than it does in a science class, of course, but we all share the joy of watching our students demonstrate their skills in a variety of ways. In addition to the fall recital, we saw it this week in kids working together to build structures in Skills for Life, a student-led Blue Team meeting, a kindergarten trip to the Pierson library, and a collaborative game in Phys Ed that had 20 students sprinting around the gym.
Next week will be particularly busy for the middle-level team. The 8th grade Where Everybody Belongs (W.E.B.) student leaders are facilitating a breakfast for 5th graders on Wednesday morning at 7:45. Our first in-person assembly (and third overall) will also take place on Wednesday 11/20, students will be filling out a survey to give input into which 5/6 or 7/8 club they want to join after we get back from November break, and Trimester 1 progress reports will be shared (via email) on Friday 11/22. Extracurricular activities abound as well: the basketball season kicks off on Monday, and the Fall Concert is on Tuesday. We’re packing a lot into the last week before November break!
One quick logistical reminder: as the weather gets colder, we’re noticing more kids asking to be buzzed into the building in the mornings. It’s hard not to say yes to this, but without staff in the gym prior to 7:25 it’s unsafe for us to let them in before then. Alice Brown starts letting early arrivals go to the gym via the School Street doors promptly at 7:25. Anyone arriving prior to that time should head to School Street to be buzzed in with the group. We need to keep the gym parking lot clear for faculty and staff arriving to get about their day. Thank you, as always, for your cooperation here. It takes a village to get all 705 kids safely in the building each morning, and we appreciate everyone’s cooperation.
Thank you,
Alison, Brett, & Emily

Highlights from the Week
Genius Hour
SCS 5th grader Danielle's art is being featured as an installation at the Pierson Library. This collection of work and artist statements were part of a Genius Hour project facilitated with her art teacher Julia Costes. Her work will be on display in the children's collection until the end of December. Danielle's abstract artwork is a collection that explores many mediums and techniques. The artwork represents a range of emotions as a way of expressing the artist's feelings. Proceeds from the sale of her work have already resulted in donations of $100 in artwork sales to One Tree Planted.
Dynamic Experiences Fun
Students continued to have a great time with Dynamic Experiences this week.
4th graders getting a special opportunity to make the announcements on Monday morning.
Students brought a sweet tooth and joined the SCS Kitchen crew for cookie decorating! The kids showcased their creativity and enjoyed a sweet treat while working in the kitchen with members of the food service team.
Blue Team students stood in the Village on Election Day and encouraged people to vote. They held signs and wore self designed t-shirts about why it is important to vote.
Volunteer Opportunities
Connecting Youth (CY) Mentoring is looking for a few more mentors!
Great volunteer positions here at SCS!
Connecting Youth (CY) Mentoring is looking for a few more mentors!
Our program matches volunteer mentors with amazing middle-school students who would benefit from an additional positive adult in their lives. Pairs meet at SCS in our dynamic mentoring space, during the school day, on a day & time that works around the mentor's and the mentee's schedules. Pairs meet for a 45" block once/week. Mentors are provided with training and continual support.
Come join our team, and enjoy the benefits of building a relationship with a great kid!
What our mentors say:
"It is so fun to be connected!"
"This is the best way to start my day! It's better than the gym!"
Please contact Alice Brown, SCS CY Mentor Coordinator, abrown@cvsdvt.org to learn more.

First Lego (Robotics) League Northern Vermont Qualifier @ SCS - Volunteers Needed
