Straight from the Hardt
Hello Ridgeline Families- Two weeks ago I talked about ala-carte scheduling and who this makes sense for and who it probably doesn’t. Today I want to tell you about a Ridgeline Senior who has benefitted greatly from a non-traditional high school schedule.
I’m pleased to introduce Sofia Stearns-pictured here. I’ll preface this article noting that Sofia gave me permission to share her story with the public.
Randomly one day, I bumped into Sofia and started chatting with her, as I heard her story, I was very impressed at how much “adulting” she was already doing at such a young age.
She is on track to graduate after attending several high school and online schools in our region before landing here where she wanted to have a more “normal” senior experience and enjoy events like prom and graduation.
She currently takes two classes on campus at RHS and at least one other online course.
During her junior year she went full time online because she began working a lot more, and landed a job at Kootenai Hospital as a CNA.
She has continued in that job during her senior year where she works three or more 12 hour graveyard (turns out they call it the ‘nocturnal’ shift now-a-days) shifts per week, 7pm-7am!
I’m glad her in-person school day doesn’t start until 4th period so she can get some sleep coming off the night shift!
She has solid plans for the future. She will pursue her RN degree, and eventually wants to be a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. She’s identified the schools, programs, residency requirements, etc… she has a plan!
Sofia has her own apartment and pays her own bills. In her free time she enjoys being outdoors with her dog. She especially enjoys the summer and spending time in the water. She definitely doesn’t like the snow!
I’m very proud of her! Her story highlights her commitment and also reminds me of many of our students who hold down jobs and work a significant number of hours during the week, while attending school. I have a great deal of respect for our students who maintain their school schedule and work nights and weekends. Everyone is just trying to make it. Working students are a great reason to have a-la-carte scheduling options available so they can earn their diploma on time!
Every week I see and hear so many great examples of the amazing talent of our Ridgeline Students. I see and hear many examples of how great young people they are in the way they handle themselves and the way they treat others. We’re fortunate to be able to provide so many opportunities to our students and when they take on a project or activity they sky is the limit for how far they often go!
This is why it is important to take a look over the Falcon Flyer every week. There is always something new and information to pay attention to. AND there’s always something to celebrate!
Make it a great weekend! --Mr. Hardt

Environmental Science News from Ms. Larsen
We’re thrilled to share that our EPA-certified AQI (Air Quality Index) monitoring station at Ridgeline is officially up and running! Thanks to a training sponsored by the EPA and the Spokane Regional Clean Air Agency, our science classes now have access to Kids Making Sense Air Quality kits—including sensors, monitors, and curriculum—so students can collect real-time air quality data both indoors and outdoors.
This new monitoring station is a valuable resource for our community, especially during wildfire season when air quality impacts outdoor activities. You can check out our real-time air quality data here:

We’re so excited to incorporate this into our science curriculum and provide real-world data for our students and community! 🌎
