Principal's Message
Hello Families,
Happy Friday to you and I hope you have all had a good week. It was an exciting week for us at school as we hosted the Spring Showcase last night and this morning we held our Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast for our school volunteers. It was great seeing all of you come out for our Spring Showcase to view student work in the classrooms and observe students singing and dancing with our Music and PE teachers, Lisa Adams and Lisa Kosher. I want to give another shout out to our amazing Music/PE Teacher Combo "the Lisas" for the efforts in planning and organizing the folk dancing and singing in a way that engaged and included all ages and ability levels. I also want to send a shout out to our teachers for thoughtfully preparing their classrooms to display the various student projects from throughout the year. Also, this morning was a great celebration of all of school volunteers. From work with our PTA and Foundation to support in our cafeteria and in classrooms and on field trips, we are so fortunate at Duniway to have such an active, engaged family involvement. You contribute to making Duniway the amazing school that we are. I wish you an enjoyable restful weekend and am looking forward to an exciting remaining two weeks of school!
Sincerely,
Principal Melvin

Duniway School Counseling Update
Celebrating Pride Month
Our Duniway Belonging Board, in the hallway leading to the auditorium, showcases heritage months throughout the year and currently celebrates Pride month. Additionally, our PPS district LGBTQ2SIA+ Supports webpage is a great starting point for finding information regarding rights, services available within PPS and the Portland metro area, and basic educational resources.
School Counseling Lessons
In school counseling lessons with Ms. Soennichsen, grades 2 through 5, we are continuing to learn about the power of using the strengths in our lives to move us towards healthy coping, positive problem-solving, resilience, and wellbeing. We are concluding the year with lessons that help us explore the unique strengths and strategies that help us with the emotions that come up during times of transition - whether it is preparing for the summer break and returning to Duniway in the fall. moving on to middle school, or moving to a new community.
Ms. Rachel has been joining the kindergarten and 1st-grade classes for her fantastic school counseling lessons on Tuesdays, and they have been continuing their learning about self-awareness and emotional regulation.
Spring Small Groups
We are wrapping up our final session of school counseling for small groups (Anxiety, Emotional Regulation, Friendship, and Social Skills) and look forward to beginning new sessions next year, in late fall.
5th-grade Middle School Transition
We just concluded our additional lessons to support the 5th-graders with their upcoming Middle School Transition, and met with the school counselors from Sellwood and other PPS middle schools our students are attending to help with their transition. As a supplement to our middle school lessons, we are hosting “Locks & Lunch” lunch bunches so that students can practice mastering the art of combination lock opening - this is a source of anxiety and is eased by having additional time to practice. We just had our first this week and our second will be the last week of school.
Girls on The Run
Our Duniway Girls on the Run team has just concluded their 8-week session and will be running their 5K this weekend, on May 31st! Way to go, Duniway GOTR!
