Libraries Needed for KRARI Kickoff!

May is Rhode Island Latino Books Month
RI Latino Arts, now in its fourth year, promotes books by and for Latinos. This month-long celebration is sponsored by the Association of American Publishers (AAP), which encourages librarians, teachers and booksellers to promote books written by and for Latinos and it encourages communities to read Latino books in both English and Spanish.
Discover a new author or re-read a favorite book this month to celebrate Latino authors and the fiction, poetry, drama, autobiography, art that they create! By launching Latino Books Month in Rhode Island, RI Latino Arts encourages Latino young people to aspire to become authors, writers and to unleash their creative spirit in words on paper. We also wish to highlight bilingual literature in all its shapes and forms.

Nominees for the 2018 RI Middle School Book Award have been announced on the RIMSBA Facebook page. The annotated list is forthcoming. Like the RIMSBA Facebook page and bookmark the RIMSBA web site for the latest information about this new award for kids in grades 6-8.

Storytimes for Children with Special Needs
Speaker(s): Wendy Kirchner, Librarian and Technology Education Coordinator, Meeting Street School
All children deserve access to library programs and services that will help them reach their potential. In this workshop participants will learn from 30 year veteran Wendy Kirschner how to structure storytimes and other programs for children with special needs. Topics include technologies to assist children with physical disabilities, practical activities for students on the autism spectrum, and tips for librarians on collaborating with experts to better serve these patrons in our libraries.
This workshop is part of the Media Smart Libraries program which was made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services Grant # LG-07-14-0045-14 and awarded to the URI Graduate School of Library and Information Studies. Attendance at this workshop could be applied to the Access & Use, Analyze & Evaluate, Create & Collaborate, Reflect, or Take Action digital badge.
