Please do not use the Board of Education lot in the morning to drop off your child(ren), unless you have been permitted to do so by a CDW staff member. Safety is our #1 priority, and the lot is purposely not used to keep all children safe.

On Monday, January 23rd, CDW welcomed over 100 students from Valley schools to compete in the AMC 8 Math Competition. As stated on the AMC 8 website, "The AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple-choice examination in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development of problem-solving skills. Possible topics include, but are not limited to: counting and probability, estimation, proportional reasoning, elementary geometry including the Pythagorean Theorem, spatial visualization, everyday applications, and reading and interpreting graphs and tables."

Thank you to Mr. Clark for preparing this important event and to Dr. Sullivan for administering the competition for all of the students in the Valley.

The NOVT Heroes and Cool Kids visited CDW for their second lesson, "Building Character," with the Grade 6 students. The high school students reviewed the terms, "respect" and "disrespect" with the students, and after getting examples of each, they led the students in a game of Family Feud. Cyberbullying, bullying, and online safety were also discussed in the second part of the lesson. As always, there were great discussions happening in each room.

For an extra credit opportunity, sixth graders had the option to build a model volcano and simulate non-explosive eruptions using vinegar and baking soda as the chemical reaction. Here are the results of their hard work! You may view the volcano compilation at this LINK.

Mr. Sammarco's Grade 7 math class completed a hands-on activity that is designed to help them visualize converting between fractions, decimals, and percent. The students used blocks, while working with a partner, to find the percentages and decimals of a variety of fractions and completed a chart to show their understanding.

Students in Mrs. DeSciora and Ms. Huster's 8th grade language arts classes recently deepened their understanding of imagery by completing an illustration of the "malevolent phantom" Boo Radley from To Kill a Mockingbird. Using descriptions from the text, students envisioned their Boo, making sure it correlated with the textual evidence from the novel.

Grade 8 language arts students in Ms. Huster and Mrs. DeSciora's classes had the opportunity to be selected to participate in Breakfast and a Book discussions with their respective teachers. While enjoying teacher-supplied breakfast goodies, students shared their favorite parts of their independent reading books with each other. It is a great opportunity for students to learn from each other in a relaxed, yet focused environment before the regular school day begins. Students are already looking forward to the next sessions!

Mr. Fearon's students learn important aspects of American History using the Socratic Method. Teachers use the Socratic Method to initiate dialogue between students through continuous provoking questions. Having prepared their thoughts on the discussion questions, Mr. Fearon randomly selected students to enter the inside circle to share their thoughts while students on the outside circle took notes.

The Northern Valley Color Guard will be starting a club guard for 7th and 8th-grade students that will teach basic flag, dance, rifle, and saber spinning in a fun setting. The students will have the opportunity to interact with members and staff of the award winning Northern Valley Color Guard & Winter Guard and will learn to spin and dance. The students will learn to perform skills similar to those that you would see in a parade or football halftime show but inside and with popular music!

The Northern Valley Club Guard will meet on Friday afternoons from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm at Northern Valley Old Tappan High School. Meetings will begin on Friday, January 27th, but you can join at any time. For more information, please contact NVOT band director, Amy Wilcox, at wilcox@nvnet.org.

CDW Girls' Basketball vs. Closter Middle School

Championship Game will start at approximately 6:15 PM.

The entire CDW community wishes both teams the very best as they battle Closter for the Valley Middle School Title.

The girls' basketball team beat Harrington Park by a score of 46 to 10 in the first round of the Northern Valley playoffs. Lexi Caneudo and Maiumi Quiros shared the leading scorer honors with 9 points each. All of Maiumi's points came from behind the arc. Alivia Badurina scored 8 and Christina D'Andrea chipped in 6.

The girls' basketball team defeated Northvale with a 43-36 win on Thursday, January 26th and will be heading to NVOT for the championship game. Alivia Badurina led all scorers with 18 points. Her 11 rebounds added to her second double-double of the season. Lea Savino scored 8 and Olivia Richards chipped in 6; both from behind the arc.

The boys' basketball team defeated Harrington Park 62-32 in the first round of the Northern Valley playoffs. Carmine Porcelli had an outstanding all around game leading the team in scoring with 23 points. Maximos DeMaras added 12, hitting 4 three pointers. Zach Miceli led the defense with 6 blocks. Chace Totten added 10 and Leo Etter chipped in 8.

The boys' basketball team defeated Northvale 50-39 in the semifinals of the Northern Valley tournament on Wednesday and now move on to face Closter in the championship game. The defensive effort was outstanding holding Northvale to a season low of 39 points. Leo Etter, Carmine Porcelli, and Chace Totten, along with Zach Miceli, Maximos Demaras, and Cole Sheridan, put on a defensive clinic, holding the league's leading scorer to 24 points. Maximos led all scorers with 15 points, hitting 5 three pointers. Carmine added 14 while Zach and Leo chipped in with 8 each. Chace hit a three at the buzzer as the first half ended giving the team momentum going into the second half.

The CDW Spirit Wear store is available on OTPTO.org! The Long Term Store is open year round and orders are shipped directly to the purchaser. The Short Term Store will reopen in the spring.

The Borough of Old Tappan has amended Ordinance 242-17. The changes are noted below:

• Left and right turns are prohibited onto Charles Place from Old Tappan Road between the hours of 7:30 AM-8:30 AM and 2:30 PM-3:30 PM on school days.

• Left and right turns are prohibited onto Kay Street from Leonard Drive between the hours of 7:30 AM-8:30 AM and 2:30 PM-3:30 PM on school days.

Old Tappan Police Officers will be strictly enforcing the ordinance.

As we get deeper into the winter months, here is information about delayed openings at CDW.

• Staff will be available for drop off to begin at 9:30 AM.
• Homeroom begins at 10:00 AM.
• After 10:00 AM, students need to enter through the front door for a tardy pass. Please drive around to the front to drop them off since the other doors will be closed.

Do you need community service hours? If so, Buddy Ball Basketball is back! The season opened on Sunday, January 8 at 12:15 PM and runs until 2:00 PM. Buddy Ball is played at the Dominican College Gym at the Hennessey Center and will run on the following Sundays: January 15th, 22nd, 29th, and February 5th. Students should see Mrs. DeSciora for more information.

Bergen County Executive James J. Tedesco III, the Board of County Commissioners, and the Bergen County Division of Mental Health & Addiction Services invite all middle and high school students to enter the Stigma-Free Sticker Contest! The Grand Prize winner will receive a $150 gift card. Entries are due by March 6th. Please see the attached flyer for rules and details and see Ms. Watters for more information.

Genesis had to make some updates to the platform; therefore, their link has changed. Please use the following link moving forward to access the Genesis Parent Portal: https://parents.c1.genesisedu.net/oldtappan.

If your app is no longer working, please log in using the link above. We are working to update our app so it is supported by the Apple Store; however, we do not have a projected date when this will be complete.

We are collecting plastic film in the three containers outside of CDW. Once a month, from October through April, our CDW students in the Environmental Justice classes will retrieve the collection bags, weigh the contents, and track our collections. Our custodians will then bring our recycling to the collection center. In April, we will find out how our school ranked in the collection of recyclable plastic film. If we collect the most in our school size category, we could win another Trex bench for our outdoor classroom! Last year we collected 1,796 lbs of plastic!

In an effort to minimize the potential spread of illness at school, please keep your child home if he/she:

• has a fever. Students should be fever-free for 24 hours without medication prior to returning to school.
• is nauseous or is vomiting.
• has diarrhea.

Membership in the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) at Charles DeWolf Middle School is open to any seventh grade student who meets all the membership requirements at the end of the third marking period in 2023.

During the week of April 24, 2023, eligible students will be identified and invited to apply

for admission to the NJHS by email. An email will also be sent to parents of eligible

students. The induction ceremony will be held during the week of May 15, 2023 (subject to

change).
