A Message from Principal Cutone
November 15, 2024
Dear HES Families and Caregivers,
It’s been another wonderful week here at HES! A big thank you to everyone who supported our Book Fair—this event is always a highlight for our Sharks. Your involvement and the hard work of our amazing volunteers made it a huge success. Together, we’re fostering a love of reading and learning that will last a lifetime.
Speaking of reading, did you know we celebrate our Sharks’ reading milestones every morning during announcements? Students earn points for every minute they spend reading, whether at home or school. When they reach a multiple of 100 steps, their achievement is recognized with a special announcement, and they’re invited to the office to receive reading coins and certificates. It’s so inspiring to see their progress and enthusiasm for books!
Thank you for making daily reading a priority at home. Just 20 minutes each night can make a world of difference! Whether they read to you, you read to them, or they read silently, it all counts and contributes to their success.
Wishing you all a fantastic weekend! As always, please feel free to reach out if there’s any way I can support your family.
All the best,
Christie

From the Heath Office
Thank you so much to everyone who has turned in their child’s paper copy of the Health History and OTC forms (all on one piece of paper). We made them brightly colored so hopefully they could not be missed. If you have not sent it in please do so as soon as possible. If you cannot find it, please let us know and we will send a new one home.
There is an increase in Pneumonia and Pertussis cases in MA. This is not cause for alarm or panic, however, we want all to be aware so you can take measures to prevent yourself and family members from becoming ill.
Mycoplasma Pneumonia (the type most commonly being seen in MA lately) is spread from person to person via respiratory droplets. Symptoms could be cough, fever, sore throat, feeling tired, short of breath, headache. Many symptoms are the same with a cold or other general illnesses. If your child has any of these symptoms that are not improving within a reasonable timeframe or seem to be becoming severe, please have your child seen by their pediatrician or go to one of the urgent care offices. Handwashing and cough covering are important for preventing spread. Children should stay home and not attend school while symptomatic.
Pertussis, also known as “whooping cough” is a highly contagious vaccine preventable respiratory illness. Pertussis illness begins with mild upper respiratory symptoms, and can progress to severe episodes of cough, often with a characteristic sounding respiratory whoop. The cough is often worse at night. Pertussis cases and symptomatic close contacts should stay home until they have completed five days of antibiotics. Please make sure your families TDaP vaccines are all up to date, as pertussis is a vaccine preventable disease.
Hand washing with soap and water or an alcohol based hand sanitizer, and covering one’s mouth when coughing and sneezing are the best ways to help spread respiratory illnesses. Thank you for doing your part in helping us keep HES safe and healthy!
Call the Attendance Line If Your Shark Is Absent
Per the handbook, if your child is unable to attend school, please enter the absence in PickUp Patrol and/or call our designated attendance line, 617-848-0115, as early as possible. Soon after arrival, our office staff begins to call the caregivers of absent students if we haven't already heard from them. This is important, as we want to ensure that all students are safe. Your phone message with the reason for the absence is all we need. While an email to the teacher is helpful, it sometimes doesn't make its way to the office staff. Thank you for your help!
