5th-7th Grade Students Important Information
Parents of 5-7th Graders:
Next week school students will be signing up for first semester electives for middle school next year. Please take some time this weekend to review the elective classes listed below and discuss with your child which electives would be best for them. 7-8th graders will sign up for electives during advisory and 5th graders will sign up with Ms. Cole.
ELECTIVE 1 OPTIONS:
Theater
Open to students interested in being in the spring play AND any other students that would just like to have fun learning about theater.
Steam Elective
This class will be with Mrs. Smith in the maker-space. Students will explore a variety of concepts and work on hands-on projects that involve science, technology, engineering, art, and math.
Classroom Assistant
Students in this elective will be selected by teachers to work in their K-5 classroom. Students will help teachers with grading work, getting lessons prepared, help specific students that need extra help in class, and even help run small group activities. There may also be availability to be a classroom assistant to a middle level teacher.
2D Art Design
The emphasis of this course is to expose students to two-dimensional art mediums and to build their creative skills through the elements and principles of design. Projects may include drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, computer generated art, and two-dimensional design.
Band
Band is a performance-based class where students will learn to develop musical technique on their instrument, as well as to play in an ensemble setting. Students joining the band elective should have already developed basic skills on their chosen instrument. Students who are wishing to learn a new instrument should plan to sign up for a first semester elective and talk to Miss Towne about starting lessons for an instrument in order to join band the following semester. Students should plan to rent an instrument through Ellis Music Co. or Music & Arts, as there are only a small number of working school instruments to be lent out. Weekly small group lessons and occasional performances are both requirements of band.
ELECTIVE 2 OPTIONS:
National History Day with Mr. Santangelo
National History Day's core program is its competition in which students in grades 6–12 choose a topic and dive deeply into the past by conducting extensive research in libraries, archives, and museums. They then present their conclusions and evidence through papers, exhibits, performances, documentaries, or websites, moving through a series of contest levels where they are evaluated by professional historians and educators.
Book Club
This class will be with Mrs. Smith in the library. Students will read and listen to books. They will collaborate and also work independently throughout the semester. At the end of the semester students will present a project sharing one of the books they read. A couple days each month students will switch gears and challenge each other in friendly, strategic games such as chess, cribbage and Clue.
3D Art
This course focuses on three-dimensional forms and ideas. This course will explore a variety of mediums including papier-mâché, clay, cardboard, metal and mixed media. Possible other mediums may be introduced.
Chorus
Chorus is a performance-based class where students will learn to use their voice in healthy ways, develop their singing voice, and sing in parts. As a performing ensemble, there will be occasional performances opportunities throughout the year that are required.
Science Buddies
Here is an opportunity for a student who enjoys doing research independently, helping others, and may see themselves working in the field of education one day. Students, working in pairs, will research, test, modify, and then present a science demonstration to one of the elementary grades each week. The presenter must also supply a written worksheet for the class to complete. In addition, be prepared to answer questions regarding their presentation from the students and the classroom teacher.
