What's Up Willowbrook
September 20, 2024
Parents & Guardians-
Happy Friday! After school, we often ask our children, “How was school today?” While some of us receive detailed answers, many hear a quick “Good” or “Fine” in response.
Today, I’d like to offer a new question (or two) that align to our "RULER: School-Home Connection" section below in this newsletter – questions that I hope will spark a rich discussion with your child(ren).
This month, as part of our RULER program, our classrooms have continued focusing on building a community and recognizing that all emotions matter. As a result, so many classroom Charters have been created throughout Willowbrook, fostering positive and supportive classroom environments.
These Charters invite students to reflect on how they want to feel in their classroom. The process begins with students answering the question "How do we want to feel in our classroom?" Common responses include feelings such as excited, respected, safe, connected, and energized.
Once these feeling words are finalized, teachers guide the class in determining the behaviors that will help everyone experience those emotions, asking: "How will we help each other experience these feelings?" Common answers include listening to each other, making eye contact, and saying thank you.
So when your student comes home today, consider asking, "How do you want to feel in your classroom?" and "How will you and your classmates help each other experience those feelings?" I hope these questions offer an alternative to and lead to a meaningful conversation.
Sincerely,
Katie Compagno
Principal
Willowbrook School

How a Charter can help at home
This month, we are building community in class by recognizing that all emotions matter and creating a Charter that reflects how we want to feel in our classrooms. Every class is creating their own unique Charter, which cultivates a sense of safety and camaraderie within our schools.
WHAT WE ARE LEARNING IN SCHOOL
Emotions influence our ability to make decisions, learn new things, be healthy, and have rewarding relationships with friends and family.
Students and teachers work together to uplift student voices and create Charters unique to each classroom.
Students engage in conversations through ‘Community Circles’ and advisory discussions to build relationships and promote understanding and perspective-taking.
WHAT YOU MIGHT DO AT HOME
Develop a Family Charter! Ask children about how they want your home to feel. Narrow down to 3-5 keywords that everyone agrees to and make it visible in your home somewhere. See the Family Charter Handout for a step-by-step process.
Ask about your child’s School or Classroom Charters: Which feeling words are most important?
