Call for Presenters: Best Practices Virtual Showcase
We are thrilled to share our upcoming Best Practices Virtual Showcases, set for Tuesday, February 18, 2025! This event offers an excellent opportunity to spotlight the outstanding work of our Migrant Education Program (MEP) staff members statewide and gives them an opportunity to share resources that can help with the work you do supporting migratory students and their families.
We had fantastic representation at our last showcase in October from Jessica Castañeda, director of Identification & Recruitment Consortium (IDRC) as well as Krystal Seymour of ESC 16 and Karim Briseño of MEP Systems Initiative. The recording from that presentation, as well as all other Best Practice Showcase sessions, is available on the TMEP portal.
Presenting at the showcase allows you to play a key role in helping attendees learn how to apply similar best practices within their own schools. Your experiences and successes can inspire others, offering valuable insights on utilizing these impactful resources to create positive change. To nominate yourself or a colleague, visit the nomination page today!
Don’t miss this opportunity to share your knowledge and learn from others to benefit from the powerful tools and resources offered by ISOSY. Together, we can continue to support the success of migratory students!
Tools to Use
IDRC
Being a member of the Identification & Recruitment Consortium (IDRC) has its privileges. One such privilege is the opportunity to use the tools and resources that make it easier for you to recruit migratory students and OSY to the MEP. The Texas Farm and Agribusiness Listings gives recruiters a number of listings to help their efforts in the field. While the listings give information throughout the state, users can filter the results by county, ZIP, and by city, to help find information in their area. This page features agricultural Google Maps, which will help staff find the locations of H2A&B work orders and housing. The page also features relevant agriculture associations and websites for the state of Texas, as well. This is a great resource to share with your colleagues to help make their work more efficient. Bookmark this page today!
iSOSY
Texas is also a member of the iSOSY MEP Consortium Incentive Grant, which helps out-of-school youth (OSY) and secondary students with resources and materials to help ensure their success. The resources support the academic and social well-being of students, including their STAT lessons (Short, Targeted, and Timely). These are quick lessons on topics that are pertinent to the lifestyles of migratory students which includes vocabulary, activities, and assessments. They feature lessons that are important for newcomers to a different country than they are used to in order to acclimate themselves better. The specific lessons currently offered include disaster preparedness, how to successfully navigate a gas station or convenience store, staying at a hotel, amongst other topics. The iSOSY website also features forms that MEP staff can utilize to organize the data that is collected in the field. This includes the OSY Profile form that is offered in English and Spanish. Check out the great lessons and resources to benefit OSY students today!

EDUCATION RESOURCES
Scholarship Opportunities
Now is the perfect time to get a start on applying to scholarships for high schoolers looking forward to college! Visiting the Financial Aid and Scholarship Opportunities page is one of the best places to get started. There, users will find out the steps in applying for college, the differences in types of financial aid, links for students to apply to colleges and universities in and out of Texas, as well as the steps necessary to apply for financial aid. Remember, applying for federal financial aid is done by completing the FAFSA form. The 2025-26 FAFSA deadline is June 30, 2026. Texas students without legal status will apply for financial aid through the TASFA. Keep in mind that the TASFA web page is only available in English, but instructions and the application are also available in Spanish. The State Priority Deadline is February 15, 2025 for the 2025-26 application year.
Be sure to also check out the Albert Lee Wright, Jr. Memorial Migrant Scholarship. The scholarship application form will be available in January and is awarded at the 2025 National Migrant Education Conference in San Francisco in mid-April. The award is given to a graduating migratory high school senior. Individuals from Texas have won the award in the past, will your student be next?
Texas Reality Check
While the future may be uncertain, planning for it can start today with Texas Reality Check. This interactive website guides users through various lifestyle choices—from housing and food to healthcare and transportation—showing the true costs associated with each option. As users make selections, the website reveals the total expenses tied to their choices and calculates the income needed to support that lifestyle in different Texas locations.
Texas Reality Check is an excellent tool for middle and high school students, providing a real-world look at salaries of hundreds of different jobs, helping students assess whether their desired career path aligns with their lifestyle goals. This reality check can help educators show students that obtaining the future they want will likely mean earning a degree from a college or university to maximize their earning potential.
