Inspire Girls to Pursue STEM!

Each March 1, Texas recognizes Texas Girls in STEM Day. The day marks a chance to celebrate and encourage the participation of girls in fields related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Ada Lovelace

Mathematician Ada Lovelace's love for math and inventing equipped her to become the computer programmer. She produced a series of computing codes after coming across the hypothetical idea for a computer like machine in the 19th century.

Barbara McClintock

Although widely ignored by her colleagues at the time, McClintock's discovery of transposition -- the ability of genes to switch physical characteristics on and off -- would later win her the Nobel Prize.

Chien-Shiung Wu

Physicist Chien-Shiung Wu made essential contributions to the Manhattan Project during the Second World War. Her innovative experiments had a huge impact on post-war nuclear physics.

Katherine Johnson

Overcoming barriers imposed on her for her race and gender with her incredible talents in physics and math. Johnson made important contributions to the early space program, notably calculating the flight paths of many
space capsules, such as the Mercury Missions and Apollo 11.

Mae Carol Jemison

Not only is she an engineer, entrepreneur, medical officer and public speaker, Mae Carol Jemison is also the first African-American woman to travel to space. She was in orbit for 190 hours aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavor in 1992.

Scarlin Hernandez

As a spacecraft engineer, Hernandez tests, operates and maintains earth-based control systems for NASA projects in space. Her work on NASA’s James Webb Telescope allows astronomers to peer back to the earliest days of the universe.

Historic Heroes: Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, and Christine Darden

Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, and Christine Darden were good at math…really good. They participated in some of NASA's greatest successes, like providing the calculations for America's first journeys into space. And they did so during a time when being black and a woman limited what they could do. But they worked hard. They persisted. And they used their genius minds to change the world. In this beautifully illustrated picture book edition, we explore the story of four female African American mathematicians at NASA, known as "colored computers," and how they overcame gender and racial barriers to succeed in a highly challenging STEM-based career.

About the Event

Celebrate Women's History Month with Girlstart in partnership with the Bullock Museum. Come explore the unique contributions women have made in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). From hands-on activities to interactive demos, this event is for kids of all ages and genders.


Enjoy free exhibition admission all day during H-E-B Free First Sundays, held the first Sunday of every month. Families can explore the Story of Texas through three floors of exhibitions that showcase artifacts from around the state.
