Langley Library Newsletter
September 2024
Hi Langley families,
All students have had their first class visit to the library - yay! Please remind your student(s), especially our younger ones, that they are responsible for taking great care of their library books. We discussed book care in the library, but it's always nice to reinforce those lessons at home. The photo you see here is our first library visit and book care lesson with Ms. Estremera's Pre-K class!
There are lots of library events happening this month, starting with Book Fair! Revenue from Book Fair is what we use to pay for all of our author visits, our Bluebonnet Breakfast in January, and materials for projects throughout the year.
We also have our first D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything and Read) time and our first Bagels and Books session! Read below to learn more about each event.
Thank you for all of your support of the Langley Library and please reach out anytime I can be of assistance!
Ms. Mary Mosley
Langley Librarian

Bagels & Books: Sessions for Parents/Guardians
Come join Ms. Mosley in the library (from 8:35-9:05 a.m.) after you drop your student at their classroom after DEAR time to do some learning about literacy! Bagels will be provided and each session will focus on a different topic. These sessions are totally optional! It's just an opportunity for you to learn about how to support your student's learning at home.
- September 20th Session Topic: The Power of Read Alouds and Independent Reading
November 1st, February 7th, and May 9th topics will be determined after parent/family feedback during the first PTA meeting.
Drop Everything and Read
We will have campus-wide Drop Everything and Read time again this year! Parents and caregivers can come check out their student(s) from their classes - make sure to bring your ID - and go anywhere on campus for 30 minutes of reading together. DEAR time begins at 8:00 a.m. (on the dates listed below) and ends at 8:30 a.m.
Bagels and Books will be in the library immediately after DEAR time. Details are below!
The dates for DEAR time this year are:
- September 20th
- November 1st
- February 7th
- May 9th
We're trying something new this year - Birthday Book Club! Celebrate your child’s birthday by donating a book to the Langley Elementary School Library in his/her honor. No need to bring in books - your child will choose from a great selection of brand new, popular titles available in the library for their Birthday Book. The cost is $20 per student to participate.
You can access the form to get more details and register for Birthday Book Club here or pick up a paper copy in the library or main office.
Library Policies - Students and Families
Here is some general information about our library policies. I want to highlight one big thing - parents and guardians can check out books! Reading to kids at home is so important and I would love to have family members checking books out of the library every day.
Library Hours
The library is generally open and available for students and families to check out/return books between 7:15 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. The library is closed for my lunch (which is 30 minutes sometime between 11:30 and 12:30, it changes day to day), when I'm in planning meetings with teachers on Wednesdays, and when I'm off-campus for meetings (once a month).
Parents/guardians must check in with the main office (with their ID) to get a visitor's badge before visiting the library.
Class Visits
Each class has a scheduled library visit every other week. Teachers can schedule additional time as needed. Students can return books and get new ones outside of their regularly scheduled library class.
Student Checkouts
All books are checked out for two weeks.
- Pre-K - Students can check out 1 book
- Kinder - Students can check out 1 book in the fall, 2 in the spring
- 1st through 5th - Students can check out 2 books
Parent/Guardian Checkouts
Parents/guardians can check out up to 5 books at a time for 2 weeks. They can come in with their child in the morning before school to check out/return books if they'd like to browse with them, but they can also come in by themselves anytime during the school day when the library is open.
Parents/guardians need to fill out a form so that Ms. Mosley can create a family account for you. You can pick up the form in the library or print it at home.
Makerspace Mornings
The library is open from 7:15 a.m. - 7:40 a.m. for Makerspace Mornings. Any student in 3rd - 5th grade is welcome to come, but once the library is full I send students back to their grade level hallway. 2nd graders will be welcome to come beginning in October.
