SAT vs ACT
The SAT and ACT are both standardized tests used for college admissions in the United States. Here are some key differences:
Structure and Content:
SAT: Consists of two main sections: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, and Math. The optional Essay section was discontinued in 2021. The Reading and Writing section tests comprehension, vocabulary in context, and editing skills. The Math section includes arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis.
ACT: Includes four sections: English, Math, Reading, and Science, with an optional Writing (Essay) section. The English section tests grammar and usage. The Math section covers a broader range of topics, including trigonometry. The Science section tests critical thinking and interpretation of data, not just scientific knowledge.
Scoring:
SAT: Scored on a scale of 400 to 1600.
ACT: Scored on a scale of 1 to 36, with a composite score being the average of the four sections.
Timing:
SAT: The total testing time is 3 hours (plus 50 minutes if taking the optional Essay).
ACT: The total testing time is 2 hours and 55 minutes (plus 40 minutes if taking the optional Writing section).
Test Style:
SAT: Generally considered to be more straightforward in terms of question style but with a higher emphasis on critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
ACT: Includes more straightforward questions but covers a broader range of content areas and is faster-paced.
Financial Aid
FAFSA and CADAA
Breaking news: The state priority deadline for financial aid in California has been extended to April 2, 2025. Based on the delayed launch of the financial aid cycle, the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) has approved requests to extend the statewide priority aid application deadline for all students in California. If students have not yet applied for financial aid for the 2025-26 academic year, we encourage them to do so today. Students and families can visit csac.ca.gov/apply to get started.
Bilingual help is available to apply for financial aid! The California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) is offering free webinars to help students and families complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the California Dream Act Application (CADAA). These presentations are live translated into Spanish. Webinars are staffed by financial aid experts who can answer questions. Attendees will learn about both applications and other important information about financial aid. Students and families should sign up for these no-cost webinars at csac.ca.gov/C4C.
Additional Financial Aid Resources:
Review the Senior Year Guide and The Importance of Financial Aid document for resources on how to apply for financial aid.
