Cardinal Connection
East Parent/Caregiver September 22, 2024
Greetings East High School scholars, families, and caregivers,
We have approached the second half of September's Cardinal Connection and as we embrace the end of the summer and September, we have quite a few events and activities left before we welcome October. Last week, we started our WIN (What I Need) time for scholars where they have an opportunity to explore our clubs and organizations, obtain help for their classes or burn off some energy with open gym activities. Scholars make their weekly selection on Monday and attend WIN activities on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
In this edition, we have included some events and activities occurring in the early October before the October newsletter. It is essential to read and save the dates so you can make the necessary arrangements to meet upcoming due dates. Just a friendly reminder, on a bi-monthly basis, our "Cardinal Connection" newsletter provides timely school information on a variety of topics; such as school events, highlights and activities, important deadlines for our scholars and families, and crucial reminders on school-related issues. This newsletter replaces the beginning-of-the-month communication sent out to families in previous school years. You received an early copy of the weekly Sunday Parent Call, which keeps you updated on events and activities at SPEHS.
Thank you for your support and feedback. It is greatly appreciated. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to the main office and our admin assistants will be able to direct you to the correct admin.

Cardinal Community - We Need Your Help!
How are we going about this? We have discussed the idea of "see something, say something" with scholars. Scholars can report these concerns to the administration through the signs and QAR posted throughout the building. Additionally, we gave the scholars some useful advice on how to keep our community safe by not opening or propping doors during our August family orientation night presentation. They have been taught this technique since elementary school, so it is not new. This is the presentation's link. In addition to this presentation, we also taught or repeated a CARES lesson during the first two weeks of the school year that covered the same subject regarding the doors at SPEHS. This is the lesson that was covered in the second block on the first day.
Scholars can enter the building through the main door, door 1, and door 16 for bus riders at the beginning of the day. Door 6 isn't an access point anymore. Students should leave the building through Door 1 both during the day and at the end. Families and guests must enter through door 1.
We appreciate your dedication to and help with maintaining the safety of our Cardinal community.

preAct Local Test for 9th - 11th grade
On September 24, 2024 9th-11th grade students will be taking a preACT exam, To learn more about ACT assessments, you can visit here. PreACT exam this Fall is different from state-wide administration, as it is a local decision to administer. It is similar in the type of questions it asks and the difficulty of those questions. This can help students get more familiar and feel more prepared for the exam that is administered through the state in the Spring. It can also help students understand their proficiency across college readiness standards, areas to work on, and growth over time between administrations.
This assessment can help educators respond to student needs through curriculum and instruction as well as other more personalized support. Results become available about 3 weeks after testing and will be shared with students so that they can understand their score report, areas of strength, and ideas for areas to improve.
The preACT exam is scheduled during normal school hours and with normal attendance expectations for all 9th-12th grade scholars. 9th-11th grade students will report to school as typical and a designated testing location..
In SP30 classes, we presented the below linked presentation for our 9th - 11th grade scholars. The presentation provides testing schedule, helpful tips for testing and answers many common questions about the test. We have provide the presentation for scholars and families to review.
