The Lion's Roar
MARCH 2024
Oak Hills Family,
It has been a fast and furious February. I want to recognize a couple of our UIL teams and students who competed and finished out their seasons in February. Congratulations to both our boys and girls basketball coaches and teams. All four teams worked extremely hard this season with our 8th grade girls “A” team winning the Magnolia tournament and ending up one game shy of claiming back-to-back district championships. Mrs. Whitmire and the cast and crew of the Oak Hills UIL One Act Play “Charlotte’s Web” claimed first-place for their performance at the district competition in Willis. This makes it three years running as UIL district champions for Mrs. Whitmire and her theatre arts department… way to go! A huge shout out to Ms. Brown and her art students who entered the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Art Contest. Addison Vecera and Kaelynn Adams were both named finalists for their artwork, and Raven Trow took home Best of Show for her watercolor painting “If the Boot Fits; Buy it in Every Color.” The Oak Hills Royal Pride dance team competed recently at Cy Woods and Humble High Schools against other schools from all over the Houston area. The officers were awarded 1st place for their routines and finished the season as being named Grand Champion Officers. As a team, they also finished first in their respective routines and ended the season on a high note receiving the recognition of Grand Champion Team to finish out the year. Congratulations to Mrs. Bess, Mrs. Faiola and all of our Oak Hills dancers on an outstanding season! Finally, congratulations to Mr. Ibarra and the Oak Hills Band as they had 41 students receive the highest rating for their individual performances in the UIL Solo and Ensemble contest. This is the largest number of band students Oak Hills has had achieve this rating... ever!
A few things as we prepare to finish out the month of March and head into the final stretch of the school year. It is only a natural inclination for students to start preparing for summer a little early. I encourage you continue to monitor grades and reach out to teachers, counselors and admin with any questions or concerns. Be vigilant with social media and have conversations with your student about the “dos and don’ts” of responsible social media posts and conversations. We have these conversations at school, but it is always good to reinforce at home as well. Hope that you and your family have a wonderful Spring Break and a reminder that Friday, March 8th is a student holiday. As always, thank you for your continued support of all that we do at Oak Hills and for sharing your student with us each day.
Be Lion Bold,
G. Whitehead

Parents with a MySchoolBucks account will be receiving an email from MSB sharing that the company is increasing their fees for adding funds to your student's lunch accounts. Please understand that this fee is not a Montgomery ISD fee, but rather is a charge from the company for the convenience of paying online.
We understand that these fees add up and we want to take this opportunity to remind you that our Child Nutrition department does accept other forms of payment. As always, in order to avoid these fees, parents and students are able to load their lunch accounts with cash or check. You can send money to school with your child at any time and it can be added to their account through our cafe managers.
Thank you for your understanding and for giving us the opportunity to serve your children.
COUNSELOR'S CORNER
Parenting with Peace
As a parent, it can often seem that chaos is all around us. However, it’s important to remember that we can always choose to find peace in the chaos. Addressing each member of the household with a calm tone, choosing our battles, and entering each day with a plan are a few of the ways you can find calm despite a messy house, busy schedule, and tiring evenings. When all else fails, having our own quiet place (whether real or imaginary) can help us to cope when we need a break. Encouraging peace in our own homes won’t be easy if we can’t find peace for ourselves. So as parents, it is critical to have personal peace in order to maintain a sustainable pace.
The main emphasis of this month’s application is that we can choose to let go of something (an argument, a grudge, an insistence) in order to maintain a relationship. There are certainly times when you can’t “let it go” and need to hold your ground, but there are other times when you can, for the sake of the relationship, step away from the argument. Talking about this with your kids can help them know when to walk away, and when to stand their ground. Clarifying your family’s values and helping them define their values will enable them to know when to engage, and when to walk away in order to maintain a friendship, get along better with a sibling, and show respect to older adults.
Questions to ask your child:
• When is it easy to walk away from an argument?
• When do you have trouble letting things go?
• How do you know when something is important to stand up for?
• As a parent, what can I do to help you learn how to “fight fair” and engage in
conflict in a healthy way?

Here are a few tips to consider:
● Have your student arrive at school on time and attend every class period, especially the official attendance-taking period (9:15 AM JH and HS).
● A student who is tardy to class will be subject to the consequences established at each campus in accordance with the possible consequences in the MISD Student Code of Conduct.
● What happens if your student needs to see a doctor/dentist/therapist? If possible, we encourage you to schedule appointments outside of school hours. Obtain and submit a medical note for documentation to provide to your student’s Campus Attendance Specialist. Documentation is needed so the absence will be coded correctly.
● When you receive an absence notification, please follow up with your student and the campus attendance specialist. If you have documentation for your student’s absence, please submit as early as possible (it is recommended to submit within 48 hours). If you believe a teacher has marked a student incorrectly, please have your student reach out to the teacher of the marked period.
