Rāmere Friday 10th June Pipiri 2022 (T2: Week 6 of 10)
Our Tumuaki / Principal
- The Power of Regular Attendance: We like to have attendance for all our children to be 90% or more. That way we can ensure learning momentum is maintained throughout their schooling. Learning is incremental - it comes in small steps day by day. COVID has driven a bus through school attendance over the past several years and we are so grateful that much of that is now on the other side for so many. Thank you mums and dads for keeping up the good attendance habits that mean our children get the best possible opportunity to learn that they can.
- Southland Cross Country: We have a strong contingent of Edendale Primary School children heading up to the Waimumu Field Day site to be part of the Southland Primary Schools' Cross Country. This occurs on Friday 17th of June. Thank you to Miss Laura McVicar for organising our school's contingent.
- Welcome and Farewell: This term is a term of welcomes and farewells as children come and go due to changes in dairy employment. We anticipate a few more children to come yet as calving comes closer and these are on top of our expected new entrants. We expect to end the year in the high 130s. A big thank you to the teachers and office staff for all their work around this. We wish those who have left all the best on your new adventure and those who have arrived, we hope all goes well for you in every way.
- Uniforms: Unfortunately, due to supply line requirements based out of China, there are several uniform items that have been discontinued as the supplier requires minimum orders of 500! There is no longer a long sleeve polo top, with only the short sleeve option available. Further, and the main impact has been on our tops with the polar fleece and sports jacket being discontinued. We are seeking to find close alternatives to these and will let you know as soon as we can.
- Matariki: We have our Kapa Haka group performing at the up and coming Matariki Gore and Districts Celebration. They are set to perform at 4.40 pm. We would love you to come along, enjoy the atmosphere, watch our children and stay on for the fireworks display. As well as the live entertainment from kapa haka and school bands from across our area, including Menzies, there will be food vendors to purchase refreshments from and activities for children. Bring your spare change.
Thank You - Team Edendale
Support Staff: Our school has a range of support staff that are integral to what we do. There is such a diversity of jobs that they undertake across the whole school that helps us tick along. They are in the office, in the classrooms, working outdoors, supporting programmes, keeping us warm, and keeping the classrooms clean. Thank you for what you do.
Matariki 2022
Schools are coming together to perform in what is a full and exciting programme of performances including kapa haka groups and school bands.
Entry to the event is free.
Food vendors are booked and will be positioned to create a 'food hall' experience for people who wish to purchase a wide variety of refreshments.
At the conclusion of the event, there will be a professional fireworks display.
Come along and be part of the celebration.

The Southland Charity Hospital will provide healthcare for those living in the Southern DHB Zone who would otherwise be unable to access treatment through the private or public systems.
The theme of our dress-up/mufti day is “My Dream Job’ - children can dress up to reflect the job that they think they would like to have when they grow up. This ties in with our current DRIVE Inquiry exploring jobs in our community.
Children who dress up or choose to wear mufti are to please bring a gold coin donation.

Our Team for this Week - Team Kea
We have 11 awesome Team Kea kids at the moment and are looking forward to more coming for their school visits and starting with us.
We love having Mrs Shepherd for a few days throughout the term as our reliever. She has been teaching us about measurement, invasion games and Māori. We are also very lucky to have Mrs Blackmore helping us for two mornings a week. She does a fantastic job at supporting us with our learning!
We enjoyed our trip to the Kamahi Reserve with Team Kiwi. We walked the short loop and in groups we did a bug scavenger hunt.
On Wednesday afternoons we join up with Team Kiwi for an Action Station Afternoon. It is something we look forward to every week. There is a mixture of action stations available for the children to choose from in Room One, Room Two, and outside. It has been a great chance for the children to build relationships with their peers and teachers and develop their key competency skills.
- Makayla – I like making loom band bracelets and going to the drawing to make pictures. It is fun playing with Team Kiwi.
- Sully – For Action Station Afternoons I like playing with the sandpit toys. We are digging a big hole to Antarctica.
We love making things and doing art. We have been learning a phonics song. It has helped us learn the alphabet and sounds. We made a video that shows the sign language for the letters and things in the song too.
- Aleeah – I like doing art because we help each other. We made lions because our letter of the week was Ll.
- Marcus – We made penguin art. We cut out paper and had a colourful background. We made snow with paint too.

At Edendale Primary School respect is demonstrated when we...
Are ready for our learning.
Work right through from start to finish.
Care for people, property and places.
Look after our belongings.
Involve ourselves in our school whanau community.
Every time our values are shown they make our school a great place to be for children and adults.

Term Three - Excellence Tohungatanga
Term Four - Integrity Ponotanga
Principal's Values Award
This week the Principal/Tumuaki would like to acknowledge Winston Wallis for being a strong contributor, living out our school values every day.
Most Valuable Pupil: Team Tui
Team Kereru’s MVP for Haepapa Responsibility is Tom Howe.
Tom comes to school every morning with a smile on his face, prepared for the day. He puts his bag in the cloak bay and will take out anything he needs, such as his homework book or a notice.
Tom is always showing responsibility in and out of the classroom. If I leave the room, I can trust Tom to still be on task and doing what he should be doing when I return.
Tom lends a helpful hand, whether it be handing out notices, homework, or cleaning up mess that he didn’t make, just to make sure the classroom is clean. He is one of the first students to offer help.
Tom will take home books to read from the browsing box and will always return them the next day. This shows he is responsible for his own gear and the school's resources. If he knows he is behind in work, he will ask to take extra home to catch up.
I know that next year, Tom will be a great responsible role model to those younger than him.
Keep up the awesome mahi Tom!
Most Valuable Pupil: Team
Team Kiwi’s MVP for Haepapa Responsibility is Erica MacBeth.
Erica shows responsibility in many ways throughout the school day. She starts the day entering the classroom with a friendly smile on her face and a cheerful good morning. Erica then quietly gets on with her day, getting herself organised by getting herself a chair, her pencil case and making sure she has a sharp pencil and is ready for her learning.
Not only does Erica show responsibility for herself, she is also always looking out for others and is quick to notice where help is needed as well as offer her assistance. She is a very kind and caring young lady.
Erica looks after her property and takes care of the equipment she uses in the classroom too, always making sure she puts things back how she found them. Erica is trustworthy and dependable - what wonderful traits to have!
Erica, you are constantly making the right choices both in the classroom and in the playground. We love having you in Team Kiwi and know you have such a bright future ahead of you.
Kei runga noa atu koe! You are awesome!
“If you take responsibility for yourself you will develop hunger to accomplish your dreams” Les Brown
Writer of the Week - Bonnie McCauley (Team Kea)
I was playing with my dog and my dog was licking me.
