University School Weekly Update

As we prepare for the upcoming week, we ask that you please review the following information:

Beta Club is collecting craft supplies to make Valentine's for Veterans.

Beta club will be having a Valentine's party February 14th, in the library. We will be creating small Valentines for the veterans at the Veteran's Administration hospital. We cannot do this without your support. We are requesting donations of the following items, which can be dropped off in a bin that is outside the main office:

• colored card stock paper
• markers
• glitter glue
• valentine's themed stickers
• valentine's themed stamps
• any other valentine related craft materials

Any student planning on returning to University School during the 2022-2023 school year, must complete this re-enrollment form for each child returning by February 28, 2022. Any student who has not completed the re-enrollment form by February 28, 2022 risks losing their spot to a student on the waiting list, so please be sure to complete the form located in the link above. The material fees can be paid when re-enrolling or by the start of the 2022-2023 school year.

All additional documents that will need to be completed, will be sent home when students return in July, 2022 (see approved 2022-2023 calendar).

February 17 @ 5:30- AP Capstone

Informational Session (Warf-Pickel Hall Rm. 125)

This is for any high school student who are interested in learning more about completing an AP Diploma or AP Certificate. Parents are welcome!

Note: Parking in the staff parking lot or parking garage should be available. Best entry to use is in the rear of the building (old Little Bucs entry).

February 21 & 22- High School Registration for grades 9-11

Registration information will be given to students at school and Dr. Shaw will go over graduation requirements and class options for the upcoming year with students. Some 11th

grade students who are dual-enrolled will meet with Dr. Shaw at a later time if they miss the meeting due to their dual-enrollment classes. Students will be able to take the information home and discuss with parents before signing up for classes for 2022-23 on PowerSchool.

February 28 @ 5:00pm-6:30pm- 8th grade registration for HS (Location TBD)

This meeting will be for all current University School 8th grades students and at least one parent/guardian. Dr. Shaw will go over high school graduation requirements, GPA, and other important information. Students will select their classes for 9th grade at this meeting. Please make plans to attend.

Reminders:

• Students will find materials relevant to scheduling, graduation, and more in their Counseling class in CANVAS. Parents can sign up to be an observer in CANVAS and will have access to this information as well.
• High school students and parents should join their grade level Remind group to receive timely information about events happening that are available to them.

Lexie is such a leader in the classroom! She is always willing to help a friend and often helps without even being asked. She sees a need and she fills it! She is kind, trustworthy, funny, and makes everyone feel special in the class! She is always positive and willing to take on any challenge ahead of her!

"Lexie is such an amazing leader in my classroom,” said Mrs. Lindsay Lester, Lexie’s 4th-grade teacher. “She is so kind to her classmates and she is always willing to go above and beyond to help in the class. She is like a mini-teacher and I am pretty sure she could run the classroom for me if needed. She is a joy to have in class!”

Middle School Honoree – Abram Helton

Abram is respectful to everyone around him and is always willing to lend a helping hand. He exhibits wonderful leadership skills in the classroom. He loves to be challenged and always gives his best effort. He and some friends have written a play that the middle school theater class has been rehearsing and Abram is leading the rehearsals. His leadership style is well-planned, kind, confident, and concise.

Getting to know Abram Helton:

• What's your favorite knock-knock joke?
  • “Knock, knock.”
    “Who's there?”
    “Chickens.”
    “Chickens who?”
    “No, owls hoo. Chickens cluck.”
    
    

• What movie never gets old, no matter how many times you watch it?
  • The Hamilton movie never gets old because a lot of the songs have catchy lyrics, and each time you watch it you pay more attention to a song that you didn't notice as much the first time.
    
    

• If you could add a face to Mount Rushmore, who would you add?
  • I think that I would add Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to Mount Rushmore to represent the equality of citizens that he (among others) obtained for America. He is a great role model that encourages people to speak up for what is right.

“Abram's peers often look up to him for advice and enjoy his kind and joyful spirit,” commented Abram’s middle school teachers. Ms. Allyson Ross, Abram’s theater teacher, added: “Abram is an inspiration to his peers and leads them with empathy and kindness.”

Kennedy is always an active participant in class and works well with others. She is pleasant and an asset to the classroom.

• What movie never gets old, no matter how many times you watch it?
  • The artsy answer would be Howl’s Moving Castle, cause it’s beautiful and I love it but honestly, Wayne’s World. Is it a good movie? Not in the slightest. Can I quote the whole thing? Yes 100%.
    
    

• If you could add a face to Mount Rushmore, who would you add? Why?
  • Probably Rosa Parks, she worked to change the state of segregation in America as a black woman and she deserves the recognition for that.

"Kennedy is a conscientious and compassionate student. She is always willing to participate in class, and I can count on her for thoughtful responses. She gets along well with and shows concern for others,” pointed out Dr. Amanda Frasier, Kennedy’s US History & Geography teacher.

Congratulations to University School student Madison Grant, who won the Twenty Under 20 Award.

Madison is one of the recipients of the Appalachian Highlands Twenty Under 20 award - Class of 2022. The Twenty Under 20 awards highlight outstanding young people in the region who have forged their own path while doing community service, excelling in academics, or starting businesses. Madison has started her own business, Lavender Design Co, which offers a variety of digital design products that she sells locally in Johnson City.

STREAMWORKS presents the 2020 Appalachian Highlands Twenty Under 20 Awards which celebrates the outstanding accomplishments of twenty individuals who are age 20 and under. These superlatives have demonstrated exemplary achievements in community service, entrepreneurialism, leadership, academics, and STEM activities. The 2021 recipients are being introduced daily on the "Appalachian Highlands Twenty Under 20" Facebook page and will be honored during a ceremony on Saturday, March 5th, 2022, at the ETSU Martin Center for the Arts.

There will be an informational meeting on Thursday, February 17th, for students interested in the AP Capstone Program at University School. This meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m., in Ms. Robinson's room, Warf-Pickel Hall Room 125. Students and their parents can learn more about AP Seminar and AP Research. Current and former capstone students will speak about their research experiences and answer questions. Classes are available for sophomores, juniors and seniors.

Dear eighth grade parents/guardians,

Eighth grade is a big year for your child since he/she will be leaving middle school and beginning high school next year. The journalism staff believes that eighth graders deserve some form of recognition for all their hard work. To help celebrate this achievement, we are including “dedications” in the 2021-22 K-8 yearbook.

If you would like to have your child in this section, please send a picture of your child (baby or current) and a short message to him/her that will be featured in the yearbook. Some examples are pictured below. There will be no extra charge for this feature. We hope to have all eighth graders included.

To be recognized as a TN Scholar at graduation, please complete all documentation and application listed in Canvas Announcement. Applications are due March 31st. This is a HARD Deadline. Please see Dr. Shaw for more information.

After some delay, it is now time to start ordering the 2021/2022 yearbooks. The good news is that there will not be a price increase for the yearbooks; however, this yearbook price does not include personalization.

There are two ways you can order your child’s yearbook.

You may order online at www://yblive.net (links to an external site). Once on the website, click on “Shop Online”. There are drop down menus for state, city, and then a choice of two yearbooks (University School Elementary/Middle or University High School). Once selecting the yearbook you wish to purchase, you may click order. You will then be prompted to create an account for the publisher, and once the account is created, you will be able to complete your order.

The price for ordering online is $50.40 for high school yearbook and $29.40 for elementary/middle school yearbook. The online cost includes a nominal ordering fee.

We are offering a chance to have your child’s yearbook personalized. This is an additional $5.20 per book. This will be added to the cost of the book.

The second way you can order is to complete the attached yearbook order form and return the completed form with a check made out to University School to either your child’s teacher or to me. Please make sure the form is completed.

The price for ordering through the school (and not online) is $40 for high school yearbook and $28 for elementary/middle school yearbook. If you want to personalize the yearbook, the cost to order through the school is $45.20 for high school yearbook and $33.20 for elementary/middle school yearbook.)

The deadline to order is April 15, 2022.

In addition, we are looking for any pictures of vacations, pets, outings, ballgames, or activities that your child has participated in this school year.

If you would not mind sharing your pictures, please send them to school with your child, or email them to me at hammondse@etsu.edu. Please make sure each person in the picture is identified.

We need the pictures as soon as possible as our deadline is quickly approaching. I will scan the pictures and return as soon as possible.

Yes, we are doing a “Back to the 80s” theme! So feel free to bust a move in that poofy prom dress or your old Bon Jovi t-shirt and ripped, acid washed jeans. You do you, McFly!

There will be food, music, dancing, and both a silent and live auction at the event while we rock out to some totally awesome 80s jams. Tickets will be $100 per person or $175 per couple and all proceeds go to fund our amazing school foundation, which supports both our teachers' and students' needs throughout the year. Attention parents: Classroom Baskets are a fun and easy way to contribute to the Spring Fundraiser! Plus—- Whichever basket raises the most money, we will win a fun Pizza Party for the winning class! Be on the lookout for information from your classroom representatives about the theme of your basket and how to contribute to this fun project!

The Athletic Committee of the University School Foundation seeks to support all University School athletes and to raise awareness of the school and its athletic programs. The initial objective of this committee is to purchase and distribute a common "University Athletics" branded practice jersey for all high school and middle school athletes. We are seeking a University School family or business to cover the costs of the jerseys in exchange for the advertisement of their business on the jerseys. This is a unique opportunity to place your company name or logo on a jersey that will be worn by at least 100 student-athletes this Spring. (Additional jerseys and t-shirts will also be available for sale for anyone wishing to support University Athletics.)

Sponsorship options:

1. $1500 donation - Large name/logo of a single sponsor will appear on the back of all of the jerseys
2. $1000 donation - Medium name/logo of sponsor will appear on the back of the jerseys; additional sponsor names/logos will appear on the jersey sleeves
3. $250 donation - Small name/logo of sponsor will appear on one sleeve of the jersey

ETSU Health will host a COVID-19 vaccine clinic on Thursday, February 18, from 10:00a.m. -1:00 p.m. in the Millennium Center. Based on availability, it is the goal of ETSU Health to provide both Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson vaccines at each clinic. However, check ETSU Health.org prior to each clinic to verify which vaccines are available that day. Availability will be updated regularly. Free and no appointment required.
