Mr. Mauck's Musings
Well Thanksgiving snuck up on us pretty quickly. With only two days of school next week this will be the last newsletter for November. We will have 15 days of school left in the semester so please check your student's grades. Congratulations to Joseph Menjivar and Mr. Jarrod Land on their selection as JHS Student and Staff of the Week. Mr. Land was also recognized as the GJCS Staff Member of the Month. Congratulations to both individuals. Four JHS students cleaned up at the annual STEM challenge at VUJ on Wednesday; placing 3rd in 1 challenge, 2nd in 2, and winning 1- putting them As 1st place overall winners! They brought home 640 dollars in cash! Winners inlcuded Jon Green, Cale Beultel, Samuel Kelly, & Luke Dahmer. I have included the Semester 1 Finals Schedule so parents and students will know which tests will be given on which days. Students are expected to be at school for all scheduled finals and review sessions. Check those backpacks for school pictures. All of the pictures have been handed out to students so if you do not have your order check with your student. Mrs. Jochum is making a request of all our hunters for deer hearts. If you will not be processing or consuming your heart consider donating it to our science department. The JHS Choir is hosting a fundraising opportunity on December 7th in the JHS auditorium. Mary Beth Donahoe and a host of local talent will be performing for free will donations to fund the choir's trip to NYC and Carnegie Hall. Our Ed Professions club is hosting another Kid's Night Out. Information is included below. The Ireland Saint Patrick's committee provided info on the button art contest.
The best Student Council in the state was hard at work this week. We are in the middle of their canned food drive with just a few days left for donations. The new bulletin boards are ready for voting. We have photos of all the new members for each grade. Today StuCo treated the student body to Thanksgiving lunch. The cafeteria staff provided turkey, mashed potatoes, corn and roll while StuCo members served drinks and deserts and decorated the cafeteria. Thank you to all these students for a great afternoon. Finally Student Council will also host the Snowball Dance on December 6th. Information is included below.
I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving and are able to spend time with family. Have a great weekend and Go Cats!

ICE/CTE Students: if your CTE class is meeting during a final you need to attend the CTE class and make arrangements with your JHS teacher for a time to make up the final. As a rule, if you are not at JHS during a normal school day schedule you do not need to attend that period during the finals schedule. If you are at JHS during the normal school day for a period you must attend all classes and review sessions for which you are scheduled. This would not include homerooms or lunch preceding a final where you are not normally scheduled to attend school.

Deer Heart Request
We will be dissecting hearts in Biomed again this year. I have preserved sheep hearts for the dissection, but in years past we have used deer hearts when available. (Which are much cooler!) I am reaching out to all of you hunters, and to any of your family members or friends who are hunters, I/we need you!
I plan to dissect hearts at the beginning of December. I am hoping there are enough of you who have children or family members interested in hunting and can get us enough deer hearts for each group. Ideally, we will need about 50 hearts for each group to be able to dissect.
If you are one of those lucky individuals to get a deer, if you could cut the heart out, and make sure you leave the top of the aorta attached (see picture below). Please rinse, then soak the heart in salt water overnight, rinse/soak again the next day, and put it in a Ziploc bag. Keep it cold, then have your child bring it to me at school, and I will store them until dissection day. If they want to dissect the heart they brought in, they need to put their name on the ziploc bag the heart is in. I appreciate any hearts you can donate, and so do the kids!

Our food drive will run until Dec 6. I am attaching what is needed most and how the points will work. You can donate money again for your homeroom and student council can buy cans and donate the funds directly to the
food bank. If every student and staff member just brought in 1 item we would donate over 1100 items. If you have any questions please see Mrs. Ferguson or any student council member.
