May/June
A Message From the Principal
What an exciting time of year! The sun shines more, the weather warms, birds are singing and we have more daylight to get outside and play! I challenge all of you to get outside and enjoy the lakeshore beauty!
As we wind down the school year, we remain focused on our reading goals and math fluency. Over the summer, venture to the library and grab some books to continue to support your child’s reading development. Read! Read! Read! Use the previously suggested apps to practice math facts to improve fact fluency. This will prepare your child for a smoother start to the school year in the fall.
I have attached a few helpful charts that might assist you in summer planning. Enjoy the sunshine and snuggle time with your children!
Have a FANTASTIC summer!!

Student Engagement Survey
On May 1st, our annual Student Engagement Survey was emailed out to each student in grades 4-12. The survey will run from May 1st to May 24th. Students will be taking the survey during class time. This is a chance for us to learn about how things are going in our schools through the eyes of our students. The survey is not scored and will not affect student grades. Responses are confidential.
Important Library Announcement
The end of the year is fast approaching! Kids will not be able to check out books after Memorial Day weekend. Please return all book students have checked out from the Library. Students who return all of their Library books will get a treat!
Excellence in Education
Our Kindergarten teacher, Ms. Amber Westergaard, received an Excellence in Education Award! What is an Excellence in Education Award?
This program allows parents, students, community members, and staff to nominate deserving school employees in the following categories:
Innovation in work (How has the employee demonstrated innovation in his/her work area?)
Culture creator in the work environment (How has the employee gone above and beyond in creating a positive school culture?)
Social/emotional well being (How has the employee impacted the social/emotional well being of students and/or the school environment?)
Community involvement (How has the employee positively impacted the community?)
Student connection (In what ways has the employee built positive relationships with students?)
Congratulations to Ms. Westergaard on receiving this award!
Dear Madison Families,
We will be having our Track and Field Day on Wednesday, May 29th, 2024. Students will be able to participate in a variety of different stations that will get them active! Some of the stations will be water based stations. Students' clothing will most likely get wet while participating at these stations. To prevent students sitting in wet clothes for some of the afternoon we are suggesting that you send your:
Kindergarten - 2nd grade students to school with a change of clothes.
3rd - 5th grade students to school with a towel for their ride or walk home.
Kindergarten - 2nd grade will be participating in Track and Field day after lunch and will have over an hour of their school day left after they have completed. 3rd - 5th graders are participating in Track and Field Day for the last hour of the day and will not have time to change before the end of day bell rings.
Thank you for your support of our school and school activities 🙂
If you have any questions please contact your child's classroom teacher or Mrs. Schrank.
The Reading Corner - SFA Updates
Greetings Families with Madison Kindergarteners,
It’s hard to believe we are in the middle of 4th Quarter ! As your Kindergartener begins to prepare for 1st grade next year, one area of focus is developing their oral language skills. We have been teaching and encouraging your child to answer questions in full, complete sentences with details. You can support this work at home with your child by encouraging them to add details to their responses. Below is the rubric we score your children on weekly. Any extra practice you can provide outside of school is much appreciated!
Greetings Families with Students in Roots,
Thank you so much for your continued support reading with your child at home by practicing those Shared Stories. The inside cover is a great way to practice decodable words (Green Words) and high frequency words (Red Words). We teach your children that they can sound out the Green Words. Word level blending is our Roots goal for the 4th Quarter, so please keep practicing sounding out those Green words!
Greetings Families with Wings Students,
Thank you for your continued support in ensuring your child reads books of his/her choosing at night. As your child reads texts in class, he/she is asked on a daily basis to write the answer to one of the team questions. Students are scored on the quality of their written responses. Below is the rubric we use to determine scores. It’s been so exciting watching our students learn to provide answers in complete sentences with text evidence!
The Counselor Corner
As the school year winds down, and we get closer to summer break I am sure that you have heard a lot about keeping your students reading and practicing math this summer! While both of those things are SO important to their continued success at school, please take some time to rest and recharge with your children this summer. Here are a few ideas to make your summer bucket lists mental health focused!
On another note, I have truly enjoyed getting to know all of the students here at Madison this school year! I look forward to continuing to work with all of them next school year. As always, please reach out to me with any questions or concerns.
