Mr. Smith's Scoop 🍦
Happy Friday
We hope everyone had a fantastic week! Here are a few important updates and highlights from
our school:
🔊 PTO Fundraiser Kick-Off!
Our PTO Fundraiser has officially begun! This is a great opportunity to support our school and
help fund future events, classroom resources, and student activities. Be on the lookout for
fundraiser details sent home; on DOJO and our PTO Social Media. Thank you for your
support!
🔬 2nd Grade Field Trip Fun!
Our 2nd graders had an amazing time at the Arizona Science Center on Thursday! They
explored hands-on exhibits, participated in interactive STEM activities, and even saw some
exciting science demonstrations. Thank you to our teachers and chaperones for making this a
memorable learning experience!
📚 AZELLA Testing Next Week
All of our English Language Learners will be taking the AZELLA (Arizona English Language
Learner Assessment) next week. This important test helps measure language proficiency and
ensures our students are receiving the support they need. Please make sure your child gets
plenty of rest and arrives on time each day!
🏠 Reading Fluency Ideas for Home
Here are a few fun ways to practice reading fluency at home:
- For K-1: Try reading simple books together and take turns reading pages. Use a fun voice or act out parts of the story!
- For 2nd-4th: Set a timer for one minute and have your child read a short passage aloud. Then, read it again and try to beat their previous word count while maintaining accuracy.
❌ Multiplication Fluency Games (Grades 3-4)
Want to make multiplication practice more fun? Try these simple games:
- Dice Roll Multiplication: Roll two dice and multiply the numbers together. Try to beat your own score by solving quickly!
- Multiplication War (with Cards): Each player flips two cards and multiplies the numbers together. The highest product wins the round!
Thank you for your ongoing support, and have a wonderful weekend!

Fresh News from the Cafeteria!
Top Chef Event
What is Top Chef?
Top Chef is a district-wide student culinary competition designed to allow students to explore nutrition and alternative career paths. Students will first compete at a site level by submitting their own written recipes to their cafeteria managers to review. If selected as their site winner, the student will then have the opportunity to be mentored by a nutrition professional and compete in the main Top Chef event. The event will be judged by chefs from our community, not attendees. Winners will receive prizes.
Who Can Compete?
All kindergarten through 8th grade students are eligible to compete to be Madison’s Top Chef.
When and Where:
Wednesday, March 26, 2025
4:30-5:30 PM
Madison No. 1 Cafeteria
5525 N. 16th St., Phoenix, AZ 85016
Who is Invited?
All Madison staff, students, and families are encouraged to come and cheer the students on!
Event Timeline & How to Enter

March 7th: A winner from each site will be announced! The student and their families will be notified.
March 17th - March 21st: Site winners will train with a mentor. The Wellness Coordinator will coordinate with the winner’s parents at this time.
March 26th: The main event! Site winners will prepare their recipes and compete for a chance to be Madison’s Top Chef: judged by three local chefs.
🎈 Got a Birthday Coming Up? Purchase a Birthday Box! 🎈
Our cafeteria can provide birthday boxes at a very low cost. This reduces the impact on classroom learning time (every minute counts), reduces the likelihood of ants in classrooms and creates a fun celebration during lunch times. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1tkA7cxvKb4gCb7RDTtE2mxsgSZzxXMui/view?usp=sharing
If you have any questions please contact Valerie, our kitchen manager at vmartinez@madisoned.org!
