Stowe's Sticky Notes
It's officially Attendance Awareness Week at Lone Star! I love getting to see everyone dressed-up in their themed outfits and talking about the importance of good attendance at school. This week I wanted to remind all of our families about some attendance policies here at Lone Star and in MISD. I also want to thank all of our families for making a commitment to having improved attendance over the past few years. It may not seem like much, but we have reduced absences by almost 2,000 days per year and that translates into much higher achievement for our students!
What is our school's goal for attendance? To STRIVE for fewer than FIVE absences each school year! Our goal is to have 96.5% average attendance.
What time does Lone Star Elementary officially take attendance? 10 AM
I need to pick up my child for an appointment, what's the last time that I can check them out? 3 PM
If my child is absent how do I turn in a note? You can request the absence in Skyward before attendance is taken that day and upload a note, or you can email a note to our registrar at jennifer.drago@misd.org.
Are doctor's notes considered excused absences? Yes, a note from a doctor or medical professional that shows a student had an appointment or received a treatment that day will be excused.
I brought my child to school after 10AM after an early doctor's appointment, are they considered present or absent with an excuse? They are PRESENT! As long as you have a medical excuse and attend school for ANY PART of the day, The Texas Education Agency considers your child present for the day and only temporarily absent for the appointment! The code in Skyward will be MED-DOC which is excused.
Are parent notes considered excused absences? Parent notes are not technically excused absences, MISD considers parent notes as a "recognized" absence. MISD puts these absences in the "other" category in Skyward. You should still always submit notes, but you can trigger attendance procedures if the parent notes become excessive.
I checked my child out early for the day, are they counted present or absent? If they are checked out after 10AM, they are considered PRESENT and the code in Skyward will be LE for Left Early. If you submit a medical note, the code will be changed to MED-DOC which is excused.
My child is sick, how long do they need to stay home? District policy is that students should stay home until they are vomit free and fever free for 24hours without the use of fever-reducing medications.

Arrival and Dismissal Notes
Do NOT park in a handicap space for any amount of time unless you have a handicap sticker. We have families that need to use these spaces.
If you are parking and not using the car rider line, you must walk your children into the vestibule. Students can only be dropped off on the car rider line.
If you arrive after 8:15am, you will need to park in the parking lot and escort your children inside for a tardy pass. Students may not be dropped off at the curb.
Transportation changes can be made through PikMyKid up until 2pm each day. Click on the calendar to update your dismissal method. It's always a good idea to let the teacher know via email/dojo/bloomz just in case.
The last time to check out a student early is 3:00pm. If you have an emergency, please contact the front office.
School ends each day 3:40pm and dismissal begins at that time. Please keep these times and the time it takes to dismiss all students in mind as you register students for extra-curricular activities.
At dismissal, if you need to buckle a child into a seat for car rider, after your child is safely in the car, please pull forward into a visitor parking spot so that you can safely buckle in your child and keep our line moving.
Updated Snack Procedures from Child Nutrition
The MISD Child Nutrition department has updated the number and grade spans for snacks to be consistent across all MISD Elementary campuses. This means that technically Kindergarten students could purchase an ice cream every day. In the past we had limited lower grades to just one day per week.
If you need to place a restriction on your child's lunch account so that they aren't charging a snack (or two!) every day, please reach out to our cafeteria manager, Erica Cedillo, at erica.cedillo@misd.org.

Nurse's Notes
Hello, Lone Star Families! I unfortunately have had several cases of strep throat and COVID reported this past week amongst all grade levels. Our kiddos have complained a lot about headaches, stomach aches and/or sore throats. Please monitor your child for any symptoms and if they have a fever of 100.0, have vomiting or diarrhea they will need to stay home and be symptom and medication free for 24 hours. Here are some tips that can help:
Stay home if ill
Wash hands with soap and water often especially before eating
Hand sanitizer
Avoid touching your mouth, nose or eyes
Cover your mouth/nose when you cough/sneeze
Avoid sharing cups and utensils
Stay Well!
