January 2025 Newsletter
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome back to school! We hope you have had an amazing break!
Please remember to check your child's folder for the daily Check-In/Check-Out sheet. Please read everything and sign it so your child can return it for points in our class store (we shop the last day of the school week).
Social Emotional Learning Moment
The first two weeks of the month, we are reviewing the previous lessons taught on the 3B's (Brain, Body, and Behavior) and Buttons. The last two weeks of the month are about Name It and Developing a Plan. The parent letter for these two areas are below.
Week 3
Greetings,
Below you will find an update on what your student learned in the Powered Up Regulation Group session this week. The session was called Name It. The students in the group learned:
Once they notice a strong emotion (what’s happening in their Brain, Body, and Behavior) in response to a button (situation that causes a strong emotion) they can take a look at the strong emotion to Name It.
Naming the strong emotion helps to be in a better place to tame it with a skill (we call these powers in this group).
How to practice naming strong emotions to ultimately feel better and to make helpful choices.
Here’s how you can support your student’s mission:
Ask the student to teach you how to name a strong emotion.
Ask the student what their strong emotion looks like when it’s too strong and when it is calm.
Support them to practice to Name It to Tame it by coming up with a name for their strong emotions when it shows up.
Week 4
Greetings,
Today, I had the joy of meeting 1:1 with your student to start the goal setting process around the skills they are learning in group. Setting goals is an incredibly important step in the process, as goals help us feel a sense of purpose and accomplishment, and also allow us to stay on track when things may get in the way.
We worked to develop a Regulation Plan. In the plan, it goes over:
Identifying the Button that when pushed causes the strong emotion to show up
Noticing how emotions show up in their Brain, Body, and Behavior
Naming the Strong Emotions
Selecting and using Powers to tame the emotion
Make a positive and helpful choice to achieve goals.
We talked about the student’s strengths, strong emotions, and important goals they want to achieve. As we learn more about the powers in group, students will select the power they want to use and update the plan as we go. Your student will begin to meet with a mentor in the school each day who will also remind, encourage, and acknowledge your student for following the steps and using their new skills.
I’ve (attached to this email or sent home a copy) of your student’s Regulation Plan so you can review and support it at home. Please reach out if you have any questions. (This will be sent home at the end of the last week in January.)
We enjoy working with your student and look forward to making progress towards your student's goals!
