The Gift of Story: Exploring the Affective Side of the Reading Life by John Schu
The Gift of Story explores the value of sharing stories in ways that speak to our hearts and connect learning communities. It grounds this affective work in a discussion of five affective elements of story―healer, inspiration, clarifier, compassion, and connector―and includes narrative discussions, rationale, and contributions from influential educators and children’s book creators along with tons of book recommendations and suggestions for direct classroom and library connections.
PD is free but participants must buy or borrow the book

3 half-hour Zoom discussion on each of the 5 elements in the book (healer, inspiration, clarifier, compassion, and connector)
7 half-hour asynchronous activities including padlet discussion and sharing of book talks

Expertise/Qualifications: Klaudia is a school librarian who has been in her library since 2001. She is a certified school librarian and history teacher. Klaudia facilitates training workshops for the International Baccalaureate Organization about school libraries and the extended essay. She has been on various AASL committees and is a 2018 past-president of MAME. Klaudia has a MLIS from Wayne State and enjoys continuing to learn and grow.

Presenter Title: School Librarian / West Middle School

Expertise/Qualifications: Amanda is a school librarian in Plymouth-Canton Community Schools. In addition to her work as a school librarian, she has also worked as a high school English and social studies teacher for almost 20 years. In both her roles as librarian and classroom teacher, she has regularly led professional development workshops ranging on topics from cultural proficiency, pedagogy, book talks, study groups, and book clubs. Amanda has served on the board of MAME and on the MISelf in books committee. She has a MLIS from Wayne State.
