Happy Friday! We are looking forward to our upcoming field trip to Pierce Middle School on Thursday, January 26th. Permission slips were sent home this week for Matilda Jr., please return these as soon as possible. Thank you!
Week of December 5th - December 9th
Bagels: Next bagel sale is December 14th. Mark your calendars: 12/14, 1/11, 2/8, 3/9, 4/12, 5/10 (Before School, During Lunch, After School) $2.00/bagel. Flavors are plain, salt, chocolate chip, cheddar cheese, and cinnamon sugar.
Reader’s Workshop: We continued with our Holidays Around the World. We read about the food and drink for that country/holiday, fun facts and traditions. After reading, we practiced going back in the text to locate answers, and we are also focusing on writing our answers in complete sentences. We did a very fun compare and contrast activity using The Gingerbread Girl, The Gingerbread Man, and The Tough Cookie. In addition, we are continuing to meet our weekly Lexia goals as well as spend some time doing IDR (independent daily reading) to continue to build our reading stamina! Reminder: Lexia is available via the Monteith website for your child to use at home.
Writer’s Workshop: We are in the final stretch of our personal narratives! We are continuing to add interesting word choices, dialogue, and feelings as we complete our final copies. In addition, we are working on creating a cover page and an about the author page too! We will wrap this up next week.
Math Workshop: We are working on telling time to the nearest five minutes and place value with 1’s, 10’s and 100’s. Please continue working on these key concepts at home as well. Suggested Extra Practice: HomeLinks 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 4.4, 4.5 Reminder: Students are able to login to the Everyday Math games and Freckle Math at home through the Monteith Students tab. These are great resources to use to reinforce the concepts we are learning in class.
Social Studies: We completed our maps of our neighborhood, focusing on what is near Monteith Elementary School. We included a map key, compass rose, and symbols, as well as Mack Ave, Lakeshore Rd, Lake St. Clair, a few other key places.
Science: This week we wrapped up our Plant and Animal Relationships Unit. We discovered that all living things depend on each other for various needs, specifically plants and animals. We will begin our next unit - Properties of Materials - after break where we will become glue engineers!
Leader in Me: Our class talked about staying focused on our most important things and saying no to less important things. Ask your child, "Why is it important to say no to less important things?"
Join the PTO: Check the Monteith website for information regarding how to join the PTO. They are working incredibly hard to create events and fundraisers to help support our school!
