Tierra Bonita Tribune - Volume 1, Issue 10 - October 11, 2024
STOKED! Is the perfect word to describe this week in Cheetah Country. Monday was the first day of Art, STEM, Japanese, PE, and Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) lessons. Then Tuesday, we had a day of Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) rotations. Teachers had that opportunity to collaborate with each other on planning upcoming field trips, math units, and discussing student progress. Thursday was CRAZY HAIR DAY for school spirit. You have to check out the pics below. We also successfully completed another fire safety drill. Shane and Jacob in 5th grade figured out Mr. Friedenberg's math problem and were awarded a free cookie at Dirty Dough. The question was, if we have about 360 students at TBES and our world record for a fire safety drill is 4 minutes and 30 seconds, how many seconds per student is that? The answer.... 0.75 seconds per student!
HUGE Shout-out to our "Book Fairies" (Parent Volunteers) who staffed the book fair this week. It was beautiful seeing our Cheetahs so excited about finding high-interest reading books.
On Tuesday, next week we're celebrating the end of Hispanic Heritage Month with a spirit day. Students and staff are invited to wear their vaquero boots, sombreros, and bright colors. There'll be a morning recess fiesta for all students! Then on Thursday, we'll be be participating in the Great California Shake-Out, when we, along with Californians across the state practice Duck-Cover-Hold safety in case of an earthquake.
Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month: Dress-Up Day!
In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, we invite everyone to celebrate the vibrant and diverse cultures of Hispanic communities by participating in a special dress-up day! Feel free to wear traditional sombreros, vaquero boots and bright colors. This attire reflects the rich history and culture of various Hispanic regions.
Wearing a sombrero and vaquero boots is a tribute to the rich legacy of Mexicoβs vaqueros (cowboys). The sombrero, with its wide brim, was historically used for sun protection and has become an iconic symbol of Mexican identity. Similarly, vaquero boots represent the hardworking vaqueros who played a significant role in shaping cowboy culture throughout the Americas.
Join us in honoring the contributions, traditions, and history of Hispanic communities by dressing up and embracing this cultural celebration!

Joan is mother of three children who have all graduated from the Poway Unified School District. Danielle Allphin - Art
I am so happy to be kicking off another year of arts education with all of our Cheetah students. My family has been part of TBES for eleven years and this is my 3rd year teaching art. I have kids of my own here at TBES, next door at TPMS, and at Poway High. I have worked as an educator for over 20 years in lots of jobs including teacher, teacher trainer, principal, non-profit director, and parent volunteer. I advocated for arts education in all those jobs because I love how the arts nurture critical and creative thinking. Plus, art is fun! We are going to have an awesome time studying and creating art together. Special thanks to our Tierra Bonita Educational Foundation for sustaining our arts education program!
Katie Teall - TK Credentialed Sub
Mrs. Teall is a credentialed substitute teacher who joins as an additional support in our TK classroom. She's been a parent at TBES for seven years and has two students who currently attend. Katie is excited to work in the vibrant and dynamic TK environment.

Before School Supervision & Early Pickup
The playground will be open to students in the morning beginning at 7:35 AM. Supervision is not available before 7:35 AM. Therefore, students may not arrive at school before this time unless they are joining us for breakfast starting at 7:10 AM.
Once students arrive on campus, they may not leave unless a parent or other authorized person comes to the office to sign them out. To ensure the safety of our students, you will be required to show identification when you pick up your child.
Drop Off & Pick Up
Morning Drop-Off
To drop off your student/s please make sure and pull all the way forward in the traffic circle. This is very important to keep traffic from backing up on the street. If you are getting out of the car to drop off your child to get them out of a car seat or to assist them out of the car please park on the street. DO NOT get out of your vehicle in the traffic circle at arrival. It is also very important that you release your child from the passenger side of the vehicle and not on the driverβs side. Please make sure to arrange your childβs car seat to accommodate this safety measure.
On the first day of school, families will be allowed onto the playground and will be able to be with their child until they are picked up by their teacher at their classroom number. Grades TK-3 students may be escorted by family members to their classrooms. The side gate and front gate will be open only on the first day of school at 7:35 AM.
After the first day of school, Students must be dropped off at the front gate or at the traffic circle and will be lining up on the playground to be picked up by the teacher. Our campus is a closed campus and parents and guardians are not allowed on campus unless they are cleared school volunteers. Gates will open at 7:35 AM and will be closed at 7:45 AM. Students arriving after 7:45 am will need to go through the office to pick up a tardy slip.
Dismissal - Please see the map.
All teachers will line up students on the grassy hill between Twin Peaks Middle School and TBES to be picked up. Please give yourself plenty of time to pick up your student/s and please be patient. Dismissal can run from 10-15 minutes. The process for dismissal is the same as arrival. Please drive all the way forward to the end of the traffic circle. Please try and come as close to dismissal as possible. You will need to park if you are on the street to not hold up traffic on the street. This will prompt law enforcement to come to our campus and they may ticket drivers.
Extended Student Services (ESS)
PUSD/Tierra Bonita provides an ESS program, which is a fee-based before and after school childcare program. ESS is open from dismissal to 6:00 P.M. We do not currently offer a morning program. All students planning to participate in ESS must be registered through the PUSD ESS department. Please access the ESS webpage for enrollment instructions and fees.
