Gifted Social Studies Weekly Update
Week of 11/11-11/15
Classroom Happenings
- National History Day is Monday, December 16, 2019 at Hixson Middle School from 5 p.m.-7 p.m.
8th Grade Classes
Students continued their NHD research by analyzing primary and secondary sources and practiced analyzing secondary source while gaining a better understanding of Veteran’s Day.
We celebrated Bellringer #50 with treats and challenges.
We sent thank you videos to Mr. Heisel for helping us learn to capture and edit videos.
Students discussed social issues in the twenty-first century, and the social issues during the time period of their NHD topic. Why do these problems exist? What are their effects? What can be done about them?
7th Grade Classes
7th Graders looked at different ways to outline or organize their notes notes in a meaningful order for their project. They should choose a way that makes sense to them for their topic. This outline--however it’s organized--will need teacher approval before Thanksgiving.
Students did a Mid-Project Evaluation on Thursday to show what they know and understand about their topic and NHD work so far. If they aren’t sure of a project type yet, students should select one by Monday so they are ready to move ahead with that work. As we move into the last weeks of this project, they may have to do some work at home or outside of class. I am usually available after school until 4:15 on Tuesdays and Thursdays if students need help or just a space to work.
On Thursday the kids also did a brief survey about what they would like to do in our class next semester after NHD is finished. It looks like we will have a fun semester of learning interesting and important things!
