Where Did Summer Take Us?
Mrs. Maher's Summer Vacation
What a summer it was! My family and I visited Colorado this summer. We went to Buena Vista, Colorado. Here we camped. During the few days, we visited the hot springs, All - terrain vehicle (ATV’D) and white rafter rafted - category 3.
Boy oh boy, I was nervous to white raft. The guide shared with us that we had to communicate and be in synchronized when navigating the difficult waters. I was white knuckled but had to trust in his experience and skills. It was a great day. We completed the day successfully and now hope to complete category 4 next time. What a goal!
I was also nervous when we ATV’D. It was raining, lightning, thunder, snow, sleet and it was COLD! Again I was white knuckled! Again, I had to trust the driver and also ATV leader on the trails and in the mountains. Again it was a great day. We completed the trail successfully and made it to the town of Tin Cup and back to the trail head. I realized it was about trust and communication, once again. Next time, we have a goal of a new trail.
My summer adventures remind me of school and how we all set goals for ourselves - students, teachers, and me. It reminds me of how we have to communicate with our peers - educationally and socially. It reminds me how we have to trust the process of learning and growing in all areas - social, emotional, and academic. Funny, how summer’s similar to school!
Happy New Year. I hope everyone has a great school year.

Ms. Imperial and Ms. DiNardo Go to Europe…Right Before the Olympics!!!
This summer our family went to Amsterdam, London and Paris. We are a family of Olympic SUPER FANS and wanted to go see the Olympics this year. But, many of the hotels and places to stay were all booked a long time ago. So…we decided to go 2 weeks before the games. We started our trip in Amsterdam and saw all the beautiful canals and sights. Then, we headed to London!!!
While we were there, we went to see the Royal Family’s Crown Jewels. We saw Buckingham Palace (where the Royals live), London Bridge and the famous Thames River. We also visited Hampton Palace (where many Royals used to live) and we even learned to use a longbow in Windsor!!!
Then, we went to Paris. It was spectacular because it was all decked out for the Paris 2024 Olympics!!! Everywhere we looked we saw banners and special statues, event venues where people would be competing and exciting merchandise for the games!!!
While we were there we visited the famous Champs d’Elysee, the River Seine, Chantilly Palace and La Tour Eiffel (the Eiffel Tower). We learned to make Macarons and we even squeezed in a trip to Disneyland Paris...because, as you all know, we LOVE Disney!!! But, honestly, the highlight of our trip was seeing the Eiffel Tower all lit up with the Olympic Rings proudly displayed on the front of it. It was amazing!!! We ate in the restaurant at the tower and walked 63 miles while we were in all the cities. Phew!!! It was exciting and exhausting all at once!!! We loved watching the Olympics after we visited many of the exciting sites where the games took place!!! It was all tres magnifique (truly magnificent)!!! :)

Catching the Moon by Crystal Hubbard - A Review By Ms. Imperial
Catching the Moon is based on the true story of Marcenia Lyle, a young girl
who wanted to be a baseball player. She played with the boys in her town and was just as good, if not better than most of them. Marcenia, though a talented ball player, was not accepted by many of the older adults in her town because they thought that she should be playing with dolls and not with baseballs. When a talent scout came to town, he saw her abilities, although not at first. But, he finally gave her a spot in his baseball camp. The rest is history, as Marcenia went on to become the first woman to play for an all-male professional baseball team...in real life!!!
I love this book because I LOVE baseball. We grew up with it in my family, as my dad played AAA ball with both the NY Yankees and the Philadelphia As (now known as the Oakland As). I tried out for one of my little league teams when I was a kid because I was inspired by my dad. At the time, the league was made up of mostly boys and I made one of the teams!!!
Catching the Moon gives us an example of how important it is to work hard. When you do, you could achieve ANYTHING you want!!! I think you'll enjoy Marcenia's story, especially if you like baseball the way that I do!!! :)
The book is waiting for you in our Woodglen library!!! Go grab it off the shelf and enjoy!!!
Mrs. Ober Loves The Library
The library has always been a sanctuary for me since I was a little girl. My mother took me there for free classes, book readings, movies and much more. I still enjoy the library at Woodglen and the New City Library. Did you know that you can take books, magazines and movies for free from the New City Library? The New City Library also has free tickets to certain museums. They also have classes and events for all ages. If are interested in any information about the New City Library please select the following https://newcitylibrary.org/. It is located at 220 N Main St, New City, NY 10956. Please email me why you love the library at Hober@ccsd.edu
We're Going on a Word Hunt...
5th graders took kindergartners around the school to search for words in our world. When they were found, the kindergartners wrote them down on their clipboards and after a while they were fantastic at spotting words in our environment!!! Special thanks to our 5th graders for helping with this amazing AND adorable activity!!! :)
