Community Update
September 13, 2024
Dear Syosset Community:
The first two glorious weeks of weather made for a cheery start of school, and now we’re cheering at the season’s first home football game under perfect conditions tonight against East Meadow. #GoSyo!
Our High School guidance department hosted their annual grade 12 College Application Workshop. Parents and seniors met in groups with their assigned guidance counselors to accelerate the college process, which began last spring with Junior planning meetings. The discussion gave families an overview of the Common Application, the Naviance Student platform (a software used to connect academic achievement to post-secondary goals), standardized exams, and the overall college process. As the old proverb says: fortune favors the prepared mind (Louis Pasteur) – and we are proud to prepare these students for the next step in their journey.
Reminder: Board of Education Meeting 📆
Our Monthly Board of Education Meeting is this coming Monday, September 16th, beginning at 8:00 pm at South Woods Middle School. I’ll run through the projects on the ballot October 1st, and review the frequently asked questions we’ve received from our survey, our meetings with the PTAs, and from our email (facilities@syossetschools.org). Tune in to the live stream, or stop by to hear the presentation.
Throughout the week, we’ve been sharing on our social media channels, YouTube, and our Bond website, a series of short videos explaining many of the projects included in the referendum. Some students I’ve gotten to know mentioned that they’d been watching them! Pressure! Learning that I held our young peoples’ attention, however briefly, is nevertheless an encouraging compliment!
Our Board of Education President, Carol Cheng, also recorded a brief message about the projects on the ballot in October that you can view below.
Shortly, if it hasn’t arrived already, a bond bulletin will arrive in your (traditional) mailbox with even more information about next month’s propositions.
#SyoArts 🎨
Syosset has always been known for its extraordinary arts programs. So one of the first things I did when I joined Syosset 10 years ago was create a “Student Artist of the Month” program where every 4 weeks, our Arts supervisor would select a new portfolio of student work to cover an entire wall of my office. Our students are so creative, so dynamic, and so talented. I’m simultaneously devastated and thrilled every 30 days when some favorite pieces disappear only to be replaced by new treasures. My staff enjoys the display too and it occurred to me I should share the wealth. September’s Student Artist of the Month is Senior Julia Rhee, and of all her remarkable works, this is the one that resonates most with me. Congratulations Julia and thanks for sharing your talent both with me and our neighbors.
Technology Upgrades 💻
The district is implementing a number of technology changes and upgrades we want to share with you.
Many of you are likely familiar with FamilyID – a registration platform the District uses for team sports registration, health forms, photo objections, student registration, etc. We are still using the same platform, but the company has changed their name to ArbiterSports. The functionality of the site has not changed – and we will continue to use this platform per our established practice.
Beginning this school year, the District is posting approved community flyers directly on our District website. You can access the flyer portal from the District home page on the right hand side information panel, or follow this link to the community section of the website. Before submitting a flyer for review, please take a moment to review the guidelines at this link to ensure compliance.
Also in the coming months, we will be transitioning to ParentSquare as our parent communications platform. It will combine Remind and parentportal@syossetschools.org communications into one robust app and email platform as a one-stop shop for all parent-to-district communications. We are currently testing out the platform with plans to roll it out by January 2025. Before the launch, we will make sure that parents, students, and staff are comfortable using the tool.
And finally, we will be soon updating the entire website to make it more modern, easier to navigate, and put the most frequently used information in the most accessible locations. Also, the “back end” infrastructure is more robust than our current site.
Please be patient with our growing pains as we make all these transitions.
Community Information
As you may know, Syosset partners with SCOPE Education Services to offer before and after school care services for elementary students. SCOPE is trying to accommodate every child that is on a waitlist, but to do so needs to recruit more staff. If you or someone you know might be interested, check it out here.
Finally, the IRS asked us to pass along information to help increase awareness about tax credits that may be available to your family. Resources can be found at this link.
⚽ #SyoSports 🏐
Our Fall season is in full swing. I got to attend a few games this week, including some volleyball, (shocker!). Newsday just released its list of top 50 volleyball players on both the girls and boys teams this season. Senior Amanda Axelrod is a dominating presence on both the offensive and defensive side of the net, racking up 141 kills and 50 blocks last season, while Junior Arkaidiy Rivkin is a threat to score from both his high-flying jump serves and elevated pin hitting.
Senior soccer player Alexa Baek is off to a hot start. After scoring 4 goals in the first half of our win against Floral Park earlier in the week, Alexa scored the only goal in our 1-0 win over a tough Oceanside team on Wednesday.
Spotlight on Instruction 🔦
Bright Spot
Syosset High School seniors Iris Hao, Irene Chen, and Shilpa Arora co-founded SYO ACCESS, a non-profit whose goal is to increase visibility of other Syosset High School, student-run nonprofits. Last weekend, SYO ACCESS hosted an expo at Syosset Woodbury Park to introduce the community-at-large to various organizations with different services and missions, from free tutoring to important volunteer work. The event featured eight organizations – and drew in more than 150 attendees.
A non-profit with the goal of raising awareness about OTHER non-profits… talk about #SoSyo! Congrats to the SYO ACCESS team on this successful event.
There’s supposed to be a gorgeous weekend on deck. Enjoy!
