Burnette Elementary Media Center
2024-2025
Welcome!
In the Burnette Media Center, we encourage our students to develop a love of reading and become lifelong learners. We provide a safe space to dream, experiment, learn, and discover.
Meet the Library Staff
Traci Costilow, Library Media Specialist
Ms. Costilow joined Burnette in 2013 as the Media Specialist. Prior to that, she was a classroom teacher for sixteen years, teaching first, third, fourth, and fifth grades.
Ms. Costilow has always loved reading and libraries. Her fondest memories are spending Saturday afternoons at the library in her hometown, curled up in a chair reading. Being a librarian, surrounded by books all day, is a dream come true!
Mrs. C, as her students know her, is proud that the Burnette Media Center earned the distinction of being named the 2019 Judy Serritella Exceptional Library Media Program (one of only four media centers in the state to be recognized), and honored to have been named the 2020 Gwinnett County Media Specialist of the Year.
Lee Nichols, Media Clerk
Ms. Nichols joined the BES Media Center in the fall of 2016. Prior to joining Burnette, Ms. Nichols worked at the Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta as the Camp Isidore Alterman Assistant Director, preschool teacher, and project coordinator.
Ms. Nichols grew up in Greenville, North Carolina, the home of the Pirates. She moved to Georgia in 2005. She loves sports and roots for the North Carolina Tarheels.
Ms. Nichols was honored as the 2018-2019 Gwinnett County Media Clerk of the Year!
Vision Statement
The Burnette Media Center will be the hub of learning at BES. We will provide a warm and welcoming environment where students can access a wide variety of diverse books in multiple formats. We will provide a variety of materials for students to pursue and share knowledge, interact, and communicate.
Self Selected Reading
Self selected, independent reading is vital if we want our children to love reading. In the Scholastic Kids & Family Reading Report: Fifth Edition , 91 percent of children ages 6-17 agree that “my favorite books are the ones that I have picked out myself.” Encouraging our children to read what they love and read for fun is the most important job we can do if we want them to be lifelong readers.
Digital Citizenship
Our children are growing up in a world surrounded by technology. Most of our students use technology on a regular basis. At Burnette, we are committed to helping our students learn digital citizenship skills in order to learn, communicate, and collaborate safely and responsibly. Digital citizenship skills are taught in our computer science specials and during research lessons in the media center.
Library Policies and Procedures

Students at Burnette Elementary have the opportunity to visit the Media Center on a weekly basis.
Kindergarten students may check out 1 book at a time. First grade through third grade students may check out 2 books at a time. Fourth and fifth grade students may check out 3 books at a time.
The loan period is for two weeks, but students are welcome to bring the book to us and we will renew it for another two weeks as long as it is not on hold for another student..
Overdue/Lost Books
There are no fines for overdue books.
Fines for lost or damaged books are $15, as set by Gwinnett County Schools.
Fines may be paid using MyPaymentsPlus.com.
If you do locate a lost book after paying for it, please return it to the Media Center and you will be issued a refund!
