With constant news updates and social media discussions lately about public schools and federal policies, it can be difficult to make sense of everything. I’d like to take a few moments to share how our district is staying focused on what matters — our students.

First, I want you to know that our district is committed to our Strategic Plan: ensuring all students receive the care, support and instruction needed to graduate from high school with plans for their most successful futures. Every child deserves access to safe, caring and effective schools where they can discover their passion for learning and a path to becoming contributing members of our community. Winter weather is here and that means it’s time to prepare for potential school delays and closures!

When severe weather is in the forecast, Roseburg School District decides whether to delay or close school based on the following considerations:

• the ability to operate school buses safely

• the ability of students and parents to drive safely

• the ability of students to walk safely

• the ability of employees to get to work on time and safely​​

Roseburg High School's advanced jazz choir, Vocal Fusion, led by Kyle Ludwig, held a Vale-grams fundraiser around the community. The group was raising funds for festival travel and registration costs for all RHS choir groups.

Green Elementary students created Valentine’s Day cards for local veterans, practicing their writing skills while adding creative touches. With music playing and special veteran guests visiting, the event was a heartwarming tradition of gratitude and kindness.

Students from Roseburg High School, Fremont and Joseph Lane Middle Schools, and Hucrest Elementary were selected for the 2025 Oregon Music Education Association All-State bands and choirs. After a statewide audition, they performed in an inspiring January concert in Eugene. Congratulations to these outstanding musicians!

RHS drama students presented their annual Celebration of Literacy play, promoting the joy of reading to elementary students. This year’s show featured song and dance. Additionally, the high school's film and theater program, led by Troy Pennington, is making its debut at the Oregon Thespians Regional Acting Competition. Congratulations to all of our performers!

We celebrated National School Counseling Week from February 3-7. School counselors play a crucial role in students' academic, social and emotional growth. They provide guidance on mental health, career planning, and personal challenges while fostering a positive school environment. No longer called "guidance counselors," their role now emphasizes advocacy, well-being, and success beyond high school. Thank you, school counselors!

Congratulations to Eastwood Elementary librarian Tamie Averett and second-grade teacher Jann Boyter for earning Crystal Apple Awards for January.

Each month, a different school presents its Crystal Apple winners for recognition by our School Board, and this January, Eastwood Elementary had the honor of celebrating its outstanding staff.

Our Elementary School STEAM Team shares the latest updates on science, technology, engineering, arts and math education around the district.

Elementary students are being introduced to the fascinating world of static energy. During the lesson, students learned how to transfer invisible energy through everyday objects. For example, they rubbed a balloon with a cloth to charge it and then used the balloon to pick up and move confetti from one tray to another. In another experiment, a plastic fork was rubbed on fur to charge the spoon, which then moved Rice Krispies from one tray to another.

Thanks to a generous grant from Cascade Community Credit Union, Nancy Neal’s third-grade class at Eastwood Elementary created and painted their own solar system models. This hands-on project made science an out-of-this-world experience!

Students in Tasha Stevens Garcia’s Legal Terminology class participated in a mock trial at Douglas County Circuit Court. Held in Judge Ambrosini’s courtroom, they explored tort law, built arguments and practiced real-world legal skills.

Roseburg High School Leadership students and Homecoming Court members raised $835 for the Community Cancer Center through their Coins for Cancer fundraiser. Carrying baskets around campus, they collected donations to support patients in need. Their generosity and teamwork made a meaningful impact!

Roseburg High School’s Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) group, led by advisor Mary Malepsy, collected 1,708 food items for local organizations. With donations from Winco, Safeway and Bi-Mart, they supported Safe Haven Maternity Home, The Samaritan Inn and Roseburg FISH Food Pantry.

Roseburg High School hosted a Career and Technical Education showcase in partnership with Oregon Association for Career and Technical Education (OACTE) in January. Legislators, industry leaders, educators and students gathered to talk about our expanding career pathways. Lawmakers toured classrooms and heard from students about hands-on courses in healthcare, automotive, welding, agriculture and more. The event highlighted our district’s commitment to preparing students for local careers, with Superintendent Jared Cordon noting that these programs offer our talented students a reason to stay and help our community thrive. Umpqua Community College President Rachel Pokrandt also emphasized the unique opportunities available in our rural setting.

As part of the Celebration of Literacy, Wildlife Safari is offering free entry to its drive-through from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb 15. Bring a flyer or driver's license with your Douglas County address to the Wildlife Safari for free entry. Check out the Village for a book walk, crafts and book exchange. Free books for every child.

Come witness the RHS theater department's spring musical, Mamma Mia! Performances will be held in the Rose Theater at 7 p.m. Feb. 28 and March 1, 7 and 8. Matinees will be at 2 p.m. March 2 and 9. Tickets will be sold at the door. $10 for adults. $5 for children 13 and younger. $5 for all students with ID.
