A Message from Mrs. Stauffer
Dear Rainbow Families,
This week brings us Spring Recess! Spring Recess is from March 27th-April 1st . Enjoy time with friends and family and take time to rest, relax, and recharge. After Spring Recess, it is back to work to finish this year strong and Wildcat Proud! Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held on, April 2, 2024. Spring conferences are by teacher invitation. If your child's teacher is requesting to meet with you to discuss your child's progress, he/she will reach out to you with a conference invitation.
As we talk about finishing the year strong, our third, fourth and fifth grade students will soon take the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) tests. The annual Pennsylvania System School Assessment is a standards-based, criterion-referenced assessment which provides students, parents, educators, and citizens with an understanding of student and school performance related to the attainment of proficiency of the academic standards. These standards in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science and Technology identify what a student should know and be able to do at varying grade levels. Every Pennsylvania student in grades 3 through 8 is assessed in English Language Arts and Math. Every Pennsylvania student in grades 4 and 8 is assessed in science.
These assessments will be administered on the following days:
- English Language Arts – April 22, 23, 24 (grades 3 - 5)
- Math – April 29 & 30 (grades 3 - 5)
- Science - May 1 & 2 (grade 4 only)
As the weather warms up, please be mindful of a few things. Layers are always best especially since the mornings are still chilly but the afternoons are warmer. Please make sure that your student wears appropriate footwear to school. Open toe sandals, slides, or flip-flops are not safe for toes or helpful when running or participating in PE. Please make sure all students wear shoes that cover the feet.
Respectfully,
Mrs. Stauffer

STEM Design Challenge
How can we help Pennsylvania farmers through engineering high-tech farming equipment? Teams of fourth and fifth graders from Rainbow tackled this question as part of the recent STEM Design Challenge hosted by the Chester County Intermediate Unit. Under the direction of Miss Kaptur over several months, teams moved through each stage of the engineering design process, from brainstorming problems, to researching existing solutions, to prototyping and testing their own creative ideas using K'Nex. The teams showcased their prototypes, design process, and blueprints in a live competition with teams from around the county. The team "Fantastic Four" consisting of Rainbow fourth graders Olivia Smith, Aubree Everitt, Nora Antonelli, and Madyson Chilcote received an impressive second place in the elementary division for their seed planting and watering robot. Additionally, the team "The Frogs" consisting of Rainbow fifth graders Anthony Segura, Aislynn Jones, Jazlynn Rivera-Foster, and Fisher Sharpless received an honorable mention in the elementary division and were commended by the judges for their impressive research and design process in developing their drone-assisted, water-conserving mushroom growing system. Congratulations to all of our future engineers who showcased the teamwork and innovation that make Coatesville great!

March: Music in Our Schools Month
March is Music in Our Schools Month! This month, we acknowledge the important part music plays in our lives, how it can impact all of us in different ways, and the role it plays in our school community. Parents, administrators, and the wider community often only see the wonderful results of our music concerts; however, we miss the months of practice and rehearsals and more importantly the learning process that takes place to make it all happen.
In every school across Coatesville, music teachers dedicate themselves to providing excellent music education to all students. At Rainbow, our 4th and 5th graders have the opportunity to be part of our amazing Band, Orchestra, and Chorus. To hear our very talented musicians in person, please come to our Spring Band, Orchestra, and Chorus concert on Tuesday, May 14th, at Rainbow at 7:00 pm!
