Loudoun County High School’s Navy Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (NJROTC) led the way in the school’s 2024 Homecoming Parade on Thursday, Sept. 19. Scheduling Reminder for This Week: October 4 Professional Learning Day
The Loudoun County School Board voted in June to approve revised calendars for the 2024-25 school year to help address the need for professional development for teachers related to new initiatives from the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) and to enhance instructional practices in literacy in alignment with the Virginia Literacy Act. The Loudoun County School Board established four new professional development days utilizing “stand-alone” days that fall between weekends and holidays designated as additional professional development days for all staff members:
These dates are:
- Friday, October 4, 2024
- Monday, November 4, 2024
- Tuesday, January 28, 2025
- Monday, June 16, 2025
In addition, earlier this spring, the School Board approved that the 2024-25 school year calendar include the observance of Rosh Hashanah on Thursday, October 3, 2024, in place of a school holiday observing Yom Kippur after a request from the community was made.
Community input was crucial in shaping this plan to balance the need for teacher development with the practical needs of our community. Read the Frequently Asked Questions posted on the website to learn more about the VDOE initiatives and changes that drove this schedule change. See the LCPS website for 2024/25 school calendar.
Take the Bell Schedule and Calendar Survey
Loudoun County Public Schools is seeking input on bell schedules and future school calendars. LCPS families and staff received a link on October 1 to complete the survey by October 15. Your input on this topic is important. The survey should take approximately 5 minutes.
First, LCPS seeks to understand how potential changes in the bell schedule and transportation may impact all students and families. Currently, LCPS has 21 schools that start at or around 7:30 a.m. As a reminder, the current bell schedule was put in place in 2022, and modified in 2024, reducing the bus driver shortage, and creating 97% on-time arrivals at school by eliminating the need to make two trips to the same school for arrival or departure. In addition, we are asking families and staff for feedback on the development of future school calendars. Check your email for the link to take the Bell Schedule and Calendar Survey.
LCPS Graduation Rates, SOL and AP Testing Outpace State
Overall achievement for students in LCPS exceeds state averages across SOL test results, AP testing, and on-time graduation rates, according to a report from the Virginia Department of Education. In addition, all of LCPS’ previously-accredited 98 schools remain accredited. According to the report, LCPS had an on-time graduation rate of 97.1%, which is 4.3 points above the state average of 92.8% and bested last year’s rates by .5%. LCPS also had the highest graduation rate among comparable-sized school divisions across the state. Read more about LCPS' 2024 achievements.

Upward Struggle Monument Honors Fight for Education Equality
Earlier this spring, the Historic Douglass High School Education & Development Campus unveiled a new sculpture -- "Upward Struggle" -- designed to capture the legacy of Black education and the fight for equality. This statute will be formally dedicated at the Legacy Day Celebration. Designed by local artist Jeffery Hall, the sculpture stands in front of the school, honoring the Black community's struggle for access to education for their children prior to the full integration of Loudoun’s public schools. The installation of the statue marked the culmination of a larger project to preserve the history of the former Douglass High School. Read more about the Upward Struggle monument.
