Lost and Found Items
PARENTS!!!!!
You're running out of time to come and "shop" for your kids' lost and misplaced items! We have a large assortment of outerwear (coats, hats, gloves), lunch boxes (some are almost brand new!), water bottles, and miscellaneous clothes (pants, shirts, shoes, etc.) We are running out of space, which means all unclaimed items will be donated over the winter break. Don't lose your chance to retrieve what's yours!
Visit both cafeterias; we have a huge amount in both of our locations.
Thanks for helping us "clean house"!!

Hour of Code
In two weeks, Oak Grove will take part in the Hour of CodeTM activities as part of Computer Science Education Week (Dec. 4-10). We are delaying our school-wide Hour of Code to the week of December 18th due to the STAR testing schedule. The Hour of Code activity is a global attempt started by Hadi Partovi to encourage over 100 million students from over 180 countries to learn the basics of computer programming. Tutorials are available for students of all ages from Kindergarten to adult. Besides that activities covered during school hours, we encourage families to visit www.code.org/learn to explore the wide variety of activities that work on computer browsers, tables, smartphones, or with no computer at all. There are new Moana, Star Wars, Minecraft, and Google Logo tutorials to try.

Curriculum Corner
Hello Oak Grove Community,
Oak Grove School is pleased to announce that we have partnered with the Center for American Education and Culture (CAEC) based out of Los Angeles for a cultural-exchange program. We will be hosting 20 Chinese students from a top middle school in China, who will attend Oak Grove for three days, February 20-22. The students will be placed in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade classes at Oak Grove. They will live with host families, which are families of Oak Grove students, for five nights.
The exposure to and understanding of other cultures is very important for success in today's society. February 16th is Chinese New Year and the Chinese students will be able to share how they celebrate their New Year with our students. The Center for American Education and Culture will take the Chinese students sightseeing on days they do not attend Oak Grove School. The CAEC will also take the students to Chicago-area high schools and universities for tours and meetings, as these students are interested in potentially attending high school and college in the U.S. The students will be involved in school and family activities during their stay and experience what it is like to live and go to school in America.
If you are interested in housing 2-4 students, or teacher chaperones, from February 19-24, please complete this short form. Once we have confirmed the ages and genders of the specific students, you will be contacted to confirm your interest in hosting students.
STAR Testing
Last week our students took their winter STAR assessment. For those few students who were absent on their assigned testing day, make ups will take place this week. The STAR assessment is a computer-adaptive assessment, adjusting the difficulty of the test based on a child's previous responses.
Students in kindergarten took the Early Literacy Test. In grades 1-8, students took the Reading and Math STAR assessments. Results will be shared with parents via email on December 21st.
Student Council News
Are you ready for the Junior High dance this Friday? Join the Student Council in celebrating the season and collecting for 'Toys for Tots' THIS Friday from 3:30-5:00pm.
What to Bring: A new, unwrapped toy for boys or girls ages 0-12 or a $10 donation. Toys for Tots prefers not to publish a list of appropriate toys to donate. Their hope is that donors consider what might be an appropriate gift for their own child/relative. Some gift ideas for the 'hard-to-buy for' pre-teens might be books, backpacks, cosmetics, purses, watch/wallet gift sets, bath gift sets, board games, or hand-held electronics. These items will be collected at the door and are your entrance fee to the dance. Also, bring some extra cash for snacks and raffle prizes.
What to Wear: Your regular school clothes
What about my backpack and coat? Leave those in your locker. You will be allowed back in the halls to pack up after the dance.
Behavior: Remember that you are at a school event and in the building. The same rules apply as if it were during school hours.
The Student Council is excited to host a fun after school event for you and a great event for kids who will get a toy as a result of your generosity!
