Our Learning Community...
It was a wonderful first week back after the Winter Break! Thank you families for all of your support helping students get back into their school routines.
As we start 2025, we want to celebrate Wendy Jensen and Aimee Leal for being the Jones Elementary Certificated and Classified Employees of the year! Their dedication, hard work, and heart make such a difference in our school community. We are so grateful for the many ways they support and inspire us. Each will be recognized by San Diego Unified and the Board of Education at a special ceremony in the spring.
Picture Books to Support Conversations about Wildfires
Our hearts are with those affected by the ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles. Events like these can feel overwhelming, even from a distance, and can bring up big emotions in children.
Below is list and link to picture books that can help navigate conversations at home. These books can help children process feelings, build resilience, and understand natural disasters in a gentle, age-appropriate way. Reading together can be a comforting way to address questions and emotions your child might have.
- "A Chair for My Mother" by Vera B. Williams -A heartwarming story about rebuilding and resilience after a family loses their home in a fire.
- "When the Wind Blew" by Margaret Wise Brown - A gentle tale about change, weather, and finding safety in family.
- "Fire Truck Dreams" by Sharon Chriscoe -This story provides comfort through a playful yet realistic depiction of fire trucks helping during emergencies.
- "The Rabbit Listened" by Cori Doerrfeld - A beautiful book about supporting others when they feel sad or scared, focusing on empathy and kindness.
- "Wildfire!" by Ashley Wolff - A lyrical picture book that explores the natural cycle of wildfires and their role in nature, offering understanding and perspective.
- "Once I Was Very Very Scared" by Chandra Ghosh Ippen - A story that explores how different animals cope with fear, offering children validation and strategies to feel safe.
- "Courage" by Bernard Waber - A celebration of bravery in all its forms, helping children recognize their own courage during uncertain times.
- "The Day You Begin" by Jacqueline Woodson - A reminder that even in difficult moments, children can find connection and strength through their unique stories.
