Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at New Children's Readiness Center at ENDO
On September 6, the Nassau BOCES Children's Readiness Center at ENDO officially opened with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Nassau BOCES Board members and senior administrators were on hand to welcome the 40 staff members who will serve 42 students in the same highly structured learning environment as our Children's Readiness Center in North Bellmore.
Six New CTE Courses Available to Students
In response to evolving career trends and student interests, Nassau BOCES Barry Tech and GC Tech have enhanced and expanded their roster of CTE courses for the 2023-24 school year. Barry Tech now offers students a new Medical Laboratory Technician Assistant course and Nail and Waxing Technician course. They have also expanded their popular Early Childhood Education program to include a Teacher Aide Preparation course. GC Tech has added a new Baking and Pastry course and an Esthetician course. Their popular Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course is now an enhanced stand-alone class.
Medical Laboratory Technician Assistant
Students learn how to assist in the performance of medical tests under the direction of pathologists, medical technologists or medical technicians, and earn industry-recognized certification while exploring laboratory science careers.
Nail and Waxing Technician
Students receive in-depth instruction and skilled training in professional nail care and hair removal in a real-world clinical setting.
Teacher Aide Preparation
Students learn the principles of child development and basic health and safety for infants, toddlers and preschoolers, and can continue into the Early Childhood Education course.
Baking and Pastry Arts
Students learn the foundational techniques used to bake breads, cakes and pastries, in addition to safety and sanitation practices.
Esthetician
Students learn various skincare treatments, safety, sanitation and professional business skills, and upon program completion are eligible to sit for the NYS Board Licensing Exam for Esthetics.
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
Students learn how to respond to emergency calls, provide immediate care to the critically ill and injured, and transport patients to a medical facility. They also prepare for the NYS CFR and NYS EMT examinations.
Three LIHSA Students Recognized in LIAA Scholar-Artist Award Program
Three exceptionally talented teens from Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) have been recognized by the Long Island Arts Alliance (LIAA) prestigious Scholar-Artist award program. Scholar-Artists Alessandra Hermes-Bevans of Wantagh UFSD and Toni Nemazi of Cold Spring Harbor CSD will be profiled in Newsday; Loughlin Reid-Cleary of Lynbrook UFSD received an Award of Merit. All three students were honored at the LIAA's annual gala.
New Jerusalem Avenue Elementary School Principal Appointed
Dr. Matthew Jurgens has been appointed Principal of Nassau BOCES Jerusalem Avenue Elementary School, effective October 1, 2023. Dr. Jurgens has served as both a building and district administrator for the past eleven years throughout Long Island in an array of learning populations within every educational level, from preschool all the way through university learners. He has a keen understanding of how the process of lifelong learning begins with a caring and nurturing educator giving children the proper environment to explore and learn.
New Virtual SIFE Academy
Students with interrupted formal education (SIFE) have unique educational needs. The Virtual SIFE Academy uses the Bridges curriculum in a virtual classroom to provide SIFE learners with an engaging and cost-effective learning environment. Students log in to their computers from their home districts to access asynchronous, half-day, small-group instruction.

STEM Grant Opportunity 2023
The Nassau BOCES Center for Online Learning has an opportunity for five Nassau County K-8 school buildings to participate in Year 3 of its Smart Start Grant. Participation is given on a first-come, first-served basis. This is a professional development grant designed to increase the use of effective instructional technology in the STEAM areas. All professional development will be facilitated by professors from New York Tech (formerly New York Institute of Technology).

Science Collegial Circle

Collaborate with science specialists, coaches, directors, and teachers from around Long Island to share best practices in Science pedagogy on location at Nassau BOCES Caumsett Outdoor and Environmental Education Center in Lloyd Harbor.
Each meeting's agenda is created organically by the needs and conversations of our members. Our guiding ideas will focus on Science Instruction, NGSS integration, Environmental Education, and updates from NYS Science Staff/Curriculum Development Network & NYSED.
