From Illusions to Pumpkins: Trimmer Elementary Students Showcase Artistic Talent
Fifth-grade artists at Trimmer Elementary demonstrated perseverance and built artistic endurance while creating high-contrast optical illusions with Ms. Tiffany Loucks. Students initially practiced their shading skills on a smaller scale before moving on to their final pieces, which utilized colored pencils and Sharpie markers. This project required extreme focus and encouraged students to explore their understanding of value. The goal was for the final illusion to trick viewers into perceiving depth and a 3D effect, despite being a flat, two-dimensional surface.
In the photos, students from Ms. Meredith Lutz's homeroom proudly display their final creations. One artist from another 5th-grade homeroom, Camden Dunn, surprised Ms. Loucks by wearing his artwork to class! His parents had ordered his artwork through Artsonia LLC as a surprise.
Students in Ms. Bailey Johnson's Autistic Support classroom at Trimmer Elementary displayed their creativity in Art class with Ms. Loucks by creating expressive pumpkins through a cut-and-tear paper collage project. Each student put great effort into tearing paper and exploring various shapes to create their perfect pumpkin. The students proudly displayed their pumpkins in a creative little patch outside Ms. Johnson’s homeroom.
Fourth and fifth-grade students Journey Brooks, Aria Brown, Ben Barksdale, and Declan St. Jacques redeemed 50 Dojo points to attend Ms. Loucks' BIG TICKET ITEM: "Spooky Paint Lab." At Trimmer, students earn Dojo points daily, and they can be cashed in to purchase things from the school store, saved for the mid and end-of-year raffles, and cashed in for BIG TICKET ITEMS allowing them opportunities to participate in special events in various disciplines. For the 'SPOOKY PAINT LAB,' they explored a spooky theme of their choice while experimenting with tempera paint sticks and liquid watercolors. Each student eagerly jumped in, creating and experimenting like scientists in a lab!
Avienda Schroyer, a 4th grader, cashed in 50 Dojo points to enjoy an extra art session focused on the artist Yayoi Kusama. Avienda created a pumpkin design featuring Yayoi's signature repetitive dots and painted it using neon tempera cakes.
Trimmer Bulldogs, look out for upcoming big-ticket items to collaborate creatively with Mrs. Loucks!

More From STEELS Science Standards
PEERS physics at the High School, with Physics teacher Mr. Arzie Yeater, starts with exciting questions and prioritizes hands-on investigations and trials to attempt to answer questions like:
- Why can re-entering your car cause an explosion at the gas pump?
- How do circuit breakers start gas fires?
- Why would a magnet stop working?
- Which car should they buy?
- Why is it dangerous to fire a bow without an arrow?
- Should seatbelts be required on school buses?
These lessons provide for physics learning in an authentic way. In the pictures below, the students were measuring velocity of a cart launched with different amounts of elastic potential energy.

Under the Lights: Seniors & Kindergartners Meet in First-Ever SeniorKinder Walk
Last Friday night, at halftime of the football game, our community witnessed a memorable new tradition: the SeniorKinder Walk. This inaugural event brought the Class of 2024 and the Class of 2037 together, symbolizing the growth and future of our district in a heartwarming halftime ceremony.
Under the Friday night lights, seniors and kindergartners began their walk from opposing goal lines, meeting at the 50-yard line in a moving moment of connection and celebration. Each senior, representing years of dedication and experience, carried a small gift for their young partner—a token of encouragement for their own school journey ahead.
After meeting at midfield, the seniors shared some brief, heartfelt words of encouragement, offering high fives and a bit of inspiration to the wide-eyed kindergartners. From wishes for perseverance to reminders to have fun and cherish each moment, the seniors conveyed the spirit of community, passing on lessons they’ve learned through their years in the school.
The SeniorKinder Walk created lasting memories for students, families, and fans, capturing the connections that make our school community special. This tradition promises to be a staple in future games, reinforcing the bond between the newest and soon-to-be-graduating members of our school family.

To wrap up Term 1 in Ms. Anne Hedgcock’s Human Development class at the High School, the students made brain hats. They learned about the different hemispheres and the lives of the brain. A brain's life stages include early development, adolescence, adulthood, and aging. Learning about how the brain works will help them as they continue to learn about how people grow and learn.
Baking and Pastry 1 Students Showcase Creativity with Delicious Cake Creations
In Ms. Anne Hedgcock's Baking and Pastry 1 class at the High School, the students finished the term by making cakes or cupcakes and decorating them. They chose the cake and frosting recipe and how they wanted to decorate them. The students did a great job! The cakes tasted great too!

Help Us Create a Field of Flags for Veterans Day!
On Monday, November 11th, we will recognize the veterans in our local community. We plan to do this through a Field of Flags fundraising campaign at both the Middle School and the High School. The funds raised will benefit the Disabled American Veterans Organization (DAV).
The campaign coordinators for the High School fundraiser are Ms. Emily Corcoran and Ms. Yvette Ganoe. At the Middle School, Mr. Andrew Johnson and Mr. James Snelbaker are coordinating their fundraiser.
DAV provides a lifetime of support for veterans of all generations and their families, in positive, life-changing ways. DAV ensures veterans and their families can access the full range of benefits they deserve and receive care and support during tough times. DAV also advocates for the veteran community on Capitol Hill, connects veterans with meaningful employment, and so much more.
These are two separate fundraising campaigns, so you may donate to one or both campaigns as you see fit. As we raise money, DAV will send flags to each school to be displayed outside on the lawns. The fundraising campaign ends on October 28th, so do not delay!
Look for our flags starting November 8th in front of the Middle and High Schools.
Donations are online only.

Again, all funds donated go directly to the DAV organization to help our nation’s veterans.

Important Information from our School Nurses
Does your child have signs or symptoms of the flu, Covid or RSV? Did they test positive?
The recommendations are that your child stay home until they are fever free for 24 hours without medication and that they feel good enough to return to school. The CDC also recommends (it is optional) that a mask be worn for 5 days after their return if they tested positive for Covid.
Students who have been exposed to someone who tested positive for Covid do not need to stay home from school unless they come down with symptoms or test positive.
If you have any questions, please reach out to your school nurse.
Student Absence Excuse Form
As a friendly reminder, when your child is absent from school, parents/guardians must complete an Absence Excuse Blank, either a paper copy or by using the online Digital Excuse Blank through the Sapphire Parent Portal. An Absence Excuse Blank must be received within three days of a students return to school following an absence, known as the 3-day rule.
The 3-day rule states "No excuse blanks will be accepted after the third day of the date of return from the absence. The absence will be recorded as unexcused for students 18 years or older. Students under the age of 18 are recorded as unlawful.”

Don't Miss Out on the Many Scholarships Available!
Our West York Area High School's Counseling Center compiles lists of available scholarships as our high school students prepare for their post-secondary educational plans and funding.
An updated list will be posted at the High School as new scholarships become available. Each time the bulletin is revised, it is printed on a different color of paper from the previous bulletin, making it easy to tell when new information has been added.
PLEASE NOTE: The date due is very important. Please have applications submitted to the Counseling Center at least 6 days prior to due date. This allows the Counseling Center staff sufficient time for review of the application and transcript preparation, ensuring that the application is sent out in a timely manner.
All hard copies of scholarship applications are located inside the Counseling Center in the waiting area in the drawer marked SCHOLARSHIPS. The Counseling Center also emails each scholarship and updated bulletin directly to students' school emails.
If you have any questions, please reach out to Mrs. Gail Wildasin in the Counseling Center.
