Celebration 2025 Poster Contest 🧑🏻🎨
Hawthorne Families,
This year, our Celebration of Children & the Arts Poster will feature art from a school-wide poster contest. This will be conducted in a similar format to the annual Hawthorne T-Shirt Contests prior to adopting the Hedgehog mascot and spirit wear. We are excited to bring back a school-wide art submission opportunity for students!
Each child was given a copy of the flyer pictured below this week, detailing the art creation expectations for submissions for this year's Celebration poster.
Important Additional Information:
➡ Due to space restrictions, all art submissions should be on 8.5"x11" sized paper (regular paper, watercolor paper or cardstock).
➡ Please ensure your child's name is on the back of the artwork. We will number the pieces for voting purposes.
Selection Process:
- Volunteers will hang art pieces & artist statements after the submission deadline - January 31.
- Staff will vote for art submissions via private form by February 4.
- The submissions with the most votes will then be moved to a featured art wall, and classes will have the opportunity to conduct gallery walks to preview the art pieces. Finally, each class will debrief and vote for up to 3 total art pieces from the featured art wall for the final poster selection.
- Once all form submissions have been completed, the winning art piece and artist will be announced.

Health Enhancement Goes Ice Skating! February 3-10
Dear Parents,
Weather permitting, we are going to be taking advantage of the Hawthorne ice rink for ice skating during Health Enhancement classes Feb 3-10. Please help your student be prepared for this experience by ensuring they have a helmet* (bike, ski, skateboard), skates (can be checked out from the school email your child's teacher in addition to completing THIS FORM ahead of time), and winter gear (gloves/mittens, snowpants, winter coat). Thank you for your help with this!
Additionally, it takes a great deal of effort to get 20-30 students on to the ice at a time. If you would be able/willing to help tie skates during your students' HE time, your help would be greatly appreciated. Please see this document for HE schedule specifics.
*Unfortunately, we are unable to "lend" helmets to students for ice skating for liability reasons. However, if your child is in need of a helmet, you are welcome to come pick from a selection of helmets. There will be tubs near the lost and found at dismissal. The helmet you choose would then belong to your family, and you are welcome to send it back with your child for skating.
Thank you!

Volunteers Needed for K-3 Ice Skating!
Please sign up below if you are interested in volunteering:
***SIGN UP HERE to assist our youngest students with skates during lunch recesses this season!***
Our office will update volunteers each day with any rink closures.
Important Ice Rink Information:
- Student Skates: If your child needs to check out a pair of skates, please email your child's teacher in addition to completing THIS FORM.
- Volunteer Opportunity: As most of our families know, skating during the school day is only possible with many helping hands! Volunteers help students get skates on and off, tie them appropriately, and enter and exit the rink safely. Our lunch recess duty staff are not able to assist this activity, as they are monitoring students on the playground. Sign up using the link above!
- Required Gear: All students need to wear skates, a helmet, gloves/mittens, and long sleeves/pants to access the ice rink. We strongly suggest snowpants, as well.
- Helmets: Unfortunately, we are unable to "lend" helmets to students for ice skating for liability reasons. However, if your child is in need of a helmet, you are welcome to come pick from a selection of helmets starting on Monday. The helmet you choose would then belong to your family, and you are welcome to send it back with your child for skating.
Families and community members are welcome to use the rink outside of school hours. Just look for the "Open" or "Closed" signs on our fence and on the sandwich boards nearby the rink for daily updates, depending on weather and ice conditions.
Please reach out to the office with any questions!

New Student Enrollment for 2025-2026
First-round registration for Kindergartners, as well as new students in Grades 1-5, will be open January 1-March 9 this year. Please see attached flyers for dates, required documents, and contact information for registration support:
School Day Schedule 🕗
School begins at 8:15 am each day. Please note that students are marked "Tardy" by our office staff if they arrive after our morning bell.
Students in grades 1-5 will be dismissed at 3:15 pm each day, with kindergarten classes dismissing a few minutes before the final bell. Please remember that there is no pick-up or drop-off in our staff lot on Mendenhall, as students are not safe crossing through this unsupervised space with poor visibility and moving vehicles.
School Parking Map
Please follow the Hawthorne Parking Map below for arrival or dismissal. Note that we have three guarded crosswalks, so please feel free to utilize parking on nearby blocks rather than attempting to park on Lamme or Mendenhall during heavy traffic times.

Volunteer Information
At Hawthorne, we treasure the ability to include volunteers in supporting student learning and activities! If you might be interested in volunteering in our community in some way this year, please see the district's Volunteer Website to read the handbook and complete the disclosure forms for our office.
Note: A volunteer is considered supervised when in the classroom, or when in the presence of a BSD7 employee. A volunteer is considered “unsupervised” when not always in the presence of a BSD7 employee (for example, on a cross country ski outing). If you plan to accompany a class as an unsupervised volunteer, please complete one of these online applications. Please note these can take several weeks to process. If you have any questions or troubles with the process, please contact me! As always, thanks for being part of our school community and supporting our students.
KidsPack
Healthy KidsPack delivers bags of nutritious snacks and kid-friendly groceries to students K-12 every Friday to eat over the weekend. The program is free and open to all; there are no income requirements. This year, Healthy KidsPacks will feature a rotating menu and include many Montana-made snacks. You can also stretch your budget with the KidsPantry program. To learn more about both programs visit gallatinvalleyfoodbank.org and click “Child Nutrition” or send any questions to kidspack@thehrdc.org.
BSD7 Student Handbook
Please Note: Smart watches or watches with phone/communication capabilities will be expected to stay home or remain turned off and in backpacks until dismissal.
Thank you for your support and understanding.
Be Sure to Stay in the Loop!
Superintendent Casey Bertram will share weekly emails on Friday afternoons, as well as monthly District newsletters that focus on important themes and highlight school activities. Please be sure to update your email address(es) and be sure to select “Receive Mail” on PowerSchool to receive important updates and district communication.
Our office will send out electronic newsletters weekly throughout the school year, and classroom teachers will also send out regular updates and classroom communications.
