Potato Lake Monthly Update
June, 2024
What a difference a month makes! Over the past month, we've enjoyed an incredible display of northern lights, and we're grateful to everyone who shared their stunning photos. Additionally, we received much-needed rain, boosting our lake levels and spurring remarkable growth in the grass and brush. With temperatures rising, the hummingbirds (and woodticks) are out and about, and the lake is becoming more active. Welcome to summer!
These are the months we truly get to savor being outside on the lake and spending time together. We hope you'll join us for our fun social gatherings, attend the annual meeting in August, check out our book club, and find time to relax and soak up the sun on these beautiful summer days.

Our May social gathering was a hit!
What fun to have over 40 of our Potato Lake neighbors join us for our May social gathering at Companeros in Dorset! It was a great evening and a perfect way to kick off the summer season on the lake! We hope you can join us in June for our next Potato Lake social gathering!
Thank you to Julie Hokeness for planning our social events! If you have a suggested activity or location for the future, feel free to contact Julie.
Our Potato Lake Loons
By Bob Berdahl
The Loons of Potato are well along with their spring activity on our lake. I was on the lake yesterday and found the MERTZ nest on the north end of the lake and west of the sand bar that reaches across the west arm. I’ve looked for this nest over the years and finally found it! Pictures are attached. I don’t know how many eggs as I did not want to upset the loon sitting on the nest. I looked for other nests on the west arm but did not find any. If anyone can find the KRAMDEN nest, let us know. This location also produced a few loon chicks last year..but we have never located the nest.
Our objectives for the 2024 season remain unchanged.
- Develop and accurate count of the adult loons and loon pairs with location and territory for each.
- Locate all loon nesting sites including nests on loon nesting platforms. This should be done by mid May.
- Monitor all nests and if reasonable the number of loon egg’s on each nest. Egg’s should appear in early May and hatch in early June.
- Track the number of Chicks that hatch and watch them through the summer to understand how many survive.
AIS...What is AIS??
Thank you!
Thanks to our cleanup crews!
Thank you to Polly Reischlein for organizing another Cty Rd 40 ditch cleanup effort! It was great to have a good number of volunteers to assist, and (based on the number of bags you filled) it looked like an abundance of trash was collected.
Additional thanks to Mike Markman and crew for the cleanup of the additional two miles from Harris Drive to Cty Rd 4.
Watch for information regarding the fall road cleanup that will take place in early fall.
