Are You Looking for Ideas to Keep Your Child Engaged in Learning This Summer?

This Special Edition newsletter provides parents with alternatives for helping your child escape from the infamous "Brain Drain" over the summer break. There are numerous opportunities for all children to explore new and exciting learning activities to expand his/her mind to new ideas, to capture gaps in learning or strengthen critical skills learnt during the school year.

CHECK OUT SOME OF THESE SUMMER PROGRAMS FOR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Let your child expand their horizons and explore interests outside what they may have access to during the school year. Below are various programs offered from Orange County to California and Nationwide Opportunities ranging from STEM options to Fine and Performing Arts or Sports related activities.

CUSD College and and Career Advantage Middle School Summer Academy

Register soon as space is limited and will fill quickly! No charge to CUSD students. Course is for current 6th and 7th graders only who will be moving up to 7th and 8th grade in Fall 2018. See flyer below.

Give Your Child 'The Edge'

Saddleback College has a new updated summer academic program to help students review concepts learnt during the school year and/or to provide a head start to courses they may be taking in the new school year. Click on the link below to learn more about the courses offered and to register. Classes are offered at both Saddleback College as well as Ladera Ranch Middle School. Don't stop at Academic Courses however! Saddleback also offers opportunities in a variety of fine and performing arts including theatre, art, film animation, music as well as a variety of sports. Let your child explore!

UCI Writing Project

Does your child enjoy writing? Or does s/he need to improve their writing skills? In it's 35th year, the UCI Writing Project seeks to improve student writing and learning. Las Flores Middle School English and Social Science teachers have trained with this project and some have been certified to teach for the UCI Writing Project. The Project focuses on meeting the California Common Core Standards and includes basic skills as well as more advanced writing techniques. Try a New Sport through UC Irvine's Summer Sports Camps

UCI offers sports camps in a variety of sports including baseball, water polo, tennis, golf, basketball, soccer, volleyball and track and field. Programs are available for athletes of all levels.

And Don't Forget Some Fun Activities!

UCI also offers recreational activities for children through their summer recreational camps which vary each week but introduce students to cooking, archery, fencing, yoga, badminton, ropes courses, climbing, hockey and lacrosse.

Does Your Child Love to Build Things (or Take Them Apart)?

UCI's FAB camp is for budding engineers. Each day will introduce different aspects of engineering and provide students the opportunities to apply the math and science concepts they are learning in school and to explore the career pathways in the fields of engineering.

Enhanced Opportunities for Gifted and Talented Students

Is your child identified as a gifted and talented learner? The Gifted Students Academy of UCI offers an intensive summer program for gifted students in grades 1 - 8. Week long courses are offered in a variety of subjects including Pre-med sciences, Bio-medical Studies, Psychology, Neuroscience, and Law and Ethics. Get Involved in the Community with Volunteering

Summer is the ideal time to spend some time volunteering in the community. Through organisations such as Lions Heart, Assisteens, or finding your own opportunities such as reading aloud to children at the library, assisting your local sports club with coaching younger children, or tutoring younger students in subjects you love. Teen volunteering benefits volunteers by helping develop social responsibility and providing teens with the experience of helping others. It builds relationships and improves communication and critical thinking skills while providing exposure to possible career options.

New York Film Academy Summer Camps for Teens and Kids -

Camp individual focus areas may include acting, filmmaking, screenwriting, journalism, photography, musical theatre, video game design, music video or 3D animation. Camps take place in many locations including New York City; Los Angeles, CA; Disney Studios in Orlando; South Beach in Miami, Florida; Harvard University in Boston; Paris, France; Florence, Italy; Sydney and the Gold Coast, Australia. Envision Junior National Leaders Conference

The Junior National Young Leaders Conference helps students develop leadership skills, while having the educational experience of a lifetime. This program includes an exclusive visit to the US Capitol’s Floor of the House, as well as hands-on activities that bring the concepts and skills of effective leadership to life. Middle School Junior Discovery Camp

Jr. Discovery is a unique, 3 week summer enrichment program for middle school students completing grades 6, 7, and 8 (ages 12-14). Students may choose from 30 different workshops including arts, sports, and academic specializations including mock trial, computer programming, crime scene investigation and music.
