Spring Break
With Spring Break right around the corner and families planning trips to warmer places, the Health Services Department felt it important to share that there is currently an outbreak of Measles in Broward County, FL (2 cases now reported in Chicago, Illinois as well). Measles is a highly contagious infectious disease that can be transmitted by direct contact with infectious droplets or by airborne spread when an infected person breathes, coughs, or sneezes. Measles is so contagious that up to 90% of people who are in close contact with the infected individual will also become infected if they do not already have immunity. However, full vaccination with the MMR vaccine provides about 97% protection against Measles. If you are unsure whether or not your child is up to date on their vaccinations, you can check their status through your healthcare provider or through WIR (Wisconsin Immunization Registry) using their name, date of birth and social security number.
