Hood College Academic Affairs
Fall 2024 Newsletter
Letter from the Interim Provost
Welcome to the 2024-25 academic year!
I hope all of you have had some time to relax and recharge over the summer months. I know a lot of faculty and staff have been busy over the summer moving forward key initiatives such as preparing to launch the Heart, Mind, and Hands (HMH) Core Curriculum in fall 2025 and continuing the work on the Middle States Self-Study.
I’m also excited to welcome an impressive “class” of new faculty colleagues to the Hood community this fall (see their bios later in the newsletter). Please take time to extend a Hood "hello" to each of them. New Faculty Orientation will take place on August 9th (8:30 am - 4:00 pm) in Whitaker Campus Center, 220. Additionally, Adjunct Faculty Orientation is planned for August 13th from 5:30-7:40 pm in Whitaker Campus Center Commons. Contact Hilary Stipelman with any questions regarding adjunct faculty orientation. This year, Associate Provost and Dean of the Graduate School, Dr. April Boulton, is leading both orientations. I also want to thank the many faculty who have volunteered to serve as mentors.
I want to acknowledge many faculty and staff who have agreed to assume some of my former Dean of Faculty roles for the upcoming academic year. Please extend a thank you to these campus leaders next time you see them.
- Drs. Michelle Gricus and Ann Stewart (Co-Chairs of Core Implementation Group)
- Dr. Jolene Sanders (Academic Judicial Council Chair)
- Dr. Karen Hoffman and Nathan Reese (Co-Chairs of Core Curriculum Assessment Board)
- Jessica Hammack, Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) Director
- Dr. Kevin Bennett and Traci Holland (Subcommittee on Core Curriculum Proposals)
I’m excited to announce that, beginning this fall, the faculty research allocation awarded through the Faculty Development Committee (FDC) will increase to $1,000/faculty member/year. These funds can be used for costs associated with faculty research. FDC applications and deadlines are posted on the FDC website. Also don’t forget about the academic innovation grants available through the Center for Teaching and Learning. Information can be found on the CTL website. Grants are available to support pedagogic research and the design/implementation/assessment of high-impact practices.
I look forward to seeing you at the Fall Forum on Monday, August 12. Please take time to welcome our newest colleagues and lend your support to their successful transition to Hood. During the morning session of the forum, we will celebrate our colleagues who have earned service and other special awards. If you teach undergraduate students primarily, please plan to attend the afternoon session of the Fall Forum. The Core Implementation Group is offering concurrent workshops from 1-2:30pm under the umbrella title, "Choose-Your-Core-Adventure."
- New faculty members and those in the beginning stages of developing Mind courses are encouraged to attend the "Core Overview and Mind Course Development" session with Kevin Bennett, Alan Goldenbach, Kat Kempert, and Ann Stewart in Hodson 210.
- Faculty planning to contribute to the "Heart" part of the Core should head to Hodson 212 for "First Year Experience/Linked Courses" with Michelle Gricus, Becky Grove, Mallory Huard, and Amy Kilpatrick.
- Faculty teaching senior capstones will find Heather Mitchell-Buck's "E-Portfolios" workshop in Hodson 235 the most helpful for determining what elements, tools, and platforms are most useful to students after graduation.
Stay for individual consultation and Core Q&A from 2:30-3:30pm in Hodson 131.
October 15th is the LAST DAY to submit Heart and Mind course proposals, no exceptions.
We will host our third annual assessment day called “Assesstivus” on Thursday, August 15 from 9am -12 noon in WCC. The guest presenters will be our own campus experts including Drs. Nisha Manikoth and Sherita Henry as well as Associate Director of Assessment, Nathan Reese. Nathan will be sending a campus flyer out soon, but the half-day kicks off at 9 am in Whitaker Campus Commons with the annual airing of assessment grievances and breakfast will be available starting at 8:30 am. If you plan to attend Assestivus, please RSVP to Haley Greene. By the way, we had 93% of all Core Curriculum courses in the AY 2023-24 collect and report assessment data. We have made great strides in assessment since our last Middle States Self-Study thanks to the work of many of you!
In the coming year, Associate Provost Boulton will be conducting three program reviews, namely Art and Archaeology undergraduate degrees, Humanities M.A. and the DOL/DBA. I look forward to supporting Dr. Boulton and the departments as they engage in the review cycle. In collaboration with multiple governing bodies (e.g., Graduate Council, Curriculum Committee), the academic-review process has been recently updated. A current description and timeline of the process can be found here.
During the coming fall 2024 semester, the Hood community will be transitioning to Ellucian’s Academic Plan module found in Power Campus / Self-Service. Some of you are already familiar with these Academic Plans, especially if you are advising graduate students. Academic Plans have been in place for graduate students for a few years now.
Some of the benefits you will see with Academic Plans for our undergraduate students include:
1. Quick load times – Since this is an Ellucian module of Self-Service, the load time will be less than a few seconds. No more waiting minutes for a Degree Progress Report (DPR) to load.
2. Global availability – Since you can access Self-Service globally, you will be able to access your academic plans globally on or off campus without the need for VPN access.
3. What If scenarios - This aspect of Academic Plans allows our students to see how far along they would be if they were enrolled in another program or declared a double major.
Due to the expedited nature of this goal, which is to have Academic Plans available for the spring 2025 advising cycle, we are bringing in an IT consultant to help with this project. The consultant will be reaching out to our department chairs to start the process of importing the degree requirements from our printed catalogs. The consultant will need your help and expert knowledge of your respective degree requirements to ensure that these plans are accurately implemented in Power Campus Self-Service. More information about this process and timelines will be shared with department chairs at our first meeting. Many thanks to Bill Hobbs, Chip Ali, and Traci Holland for their guidance and expertise on this important initiative.
Finally, I want to extend my sincere thanks to many of you who have reached out to wish me well in this interim role. And I want to also take this opportunity to extend my gratitude to Julie Chalk. She has tirelessly answered my emails, hopped on Zoom and Teams with me, and is truly the heart and soul of the Provost's office. You rock, Julie!
It’s going to be another busy but exciting year. Please know that I am grateful for your partnership and support of the important work ahead.
Have a wonderful academic year!
Paige
