Cardinal Recognitions
Thank You To:
- Jason Adler & Donna Bass for coaching our Spell Bowl team. The team took 9th place out of the 31 team who qualified for state this weekend at Purdue. The SHS team improved from 53 correct words spelled in the state qualifying round to 67 words in the state competition. Thank you for your support and for providing the team with treats during each practice!
- Caleb Francis for all of his work in directing the upcoming musical. The stage looks amazing and we can't wait to watch The Addams Family this weekend!
- The PTSG (Parent, Teacher, Student Group) for organizing and running the first annual vendor/craft fair fundraiser this past Saturday. The event was a huge success because of their time, energy, and effort. A big shout out to our Key Club students who volunteered to assist with setup, check-in and tear down.
- Sara Berghoff, David Luers, Kevin Sanders, and Austin Lundsford for running the Speech and Debate competition at SHS this Saturday. There were 37 teams from across the state at SHS and they did a great job of organizing students, judges, and school sponsors.
- Eric Woodke for supporting all of the events at SHS this weekend and making clear signage for visitors to enhance their experience at SHS.
Spell Bowl Team - 9th in State
Congratulations!
Joan Tejchma
Our very own, Joan Tejchma, is presenting at the INTESOL conference this coming weekend. She is sharing her best practices and specifically focusing on teaching EL students through imagery. We are so proud of the work she does every day and are extremely excited for her to share it with teachers across the state!

Mrs. Stanley
Mrs. Stanley's ENL 3 students are enhancing their argumentative writing skills by analyzing Episode 11 of the podcast Serial, choosing between a speaking or writing exercise to build their case. After completing the exercise, they’ll exchange peer feedback and discuss the main character’s guilt or innocence, promoting critical thinking and collaborative learning.
Ms. Kohne
Ms. Kohne introduced The Tragedy of Julius Caesar to Mr. Auger’s English 10 Honors class. Students had to evaluate character and theme related statements for degree of agreement and provide examples for support for their statement of agreement from real life and history. Students then had to connect and apply character and theme related ideas from Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Julius Caesar to real life and history to anticipate reading.
Mr. Armbruster
Mr. Armbruster’s AP World History students dive into a comparative study of Feudal Japan and Ming China, working in groups to research, discuss, and present their findings. Through collaboration and critical analysis, they’re building connections between historical empires and honing skills essential for their AP exams.
Mrs. Jordan
Mrs. Jordan’s nutrition classes created their own ramen noodle recipes. They then went into the kitchen to put their creations to the test. Not only did they get to see if their unique recipes worked, they also had other groups taste test it.
Mentor Teacher ILT
During after School ILT, the Instructional Coaches and Mentor Teachers work in small groups to understand the capabilities of ELLevation and its impact on student success in the classroom.
CASEL Conference
I had the honor of attending the CASEL conference in Chicago this week with other school leaders, counselors, and social workers from across our district. We were able to hear from practitioners and researchers from across the nation about the work already being done to support students across the nation. I'm excited to take the new learning to enhance what we are already doing at SHS.
The sessions I was able to attend were:
Elevating Ownership of Lifelong Learning in Middle and High School Students
Healing Trauma: Empowering PreK-12 Educators for Student Resilience
Beyond Borders and Backpacks: Building Bridges for Newcomer SEL
Level Up Learning - Unleashing the Power of SEL in Secondary Classrooms
Social and Emotional Learning and Academic Success: Integrating SEL Principles, Skills, and Tools into the Instruction
Mr. Skinner - Girls Wrestling Team
Coach Skinner and the girls wrestling team participated in the first ever Marion County Girls' Wrestling tournament at Beech Grove High School this weekend. The team battled hard and had two wrestlers make it to the final match in their weight class. While we only had 1 champion, all of the girls did a great job. We are excited to continue to hear more about their first ever official IHSAA season this year.
Boys Soccer Team
The entire boys soccer team and program were recognized at the November School Board meeting for their record-setting season. Congratulations once again and thank you for positively representing SHS!
ENL 3 Field Trip
Mrs. Stanley, Mrs. Harmon, Ms. Delgado, and Ms. Mawi took our ENL 3 students on a field triop to the US District Court House. The students enjoyed seeing the courthouse, were able to ask a bunch of questions to Judge Pratt, and did a jury deliberation activity. It was a great experience for our students!
Mr. Wright - All Region Orchestra
Mr. Wright took six Perry Township orchestra students who were selected to participate in the Indiana String Teachers Association All Region Orchestra to the event this weekend.
