WELCOME!
Welcome to the 23-24 end-of-year issue of Beyond Words, a newsletter written for parents and families of students with dyslexia in Round Rock ISD.
From the Desk of Donna Wise
Welcome to the final issue of Beyond Words for the 2023-2024 school year.
I'm happy to announce that in Round Rock ISD, we've added another state board-approved dyslexia program called Reading by Design to our list of services. This means we have multiple ways to provide services to students with dyslexia in our district.
Our team's mission is to provide reliable and intentional support through programming and compliance to ensure all students succeed. We care about our students, parents, and staff, and always strive to improve.
I hope you have a wonderful summer! I can't wait to see what the 2024-2025 school year has in store for us. Thank you for being a part of our journey this year!

Texas Dyslexia Grant Success
The Texas Dyslexia Grant was awarded to Round Rock ISD for use in the 2023-2024 school year. Round Rock was awarded $112,625. The specific need in Round Rock ISD was to expand our continuum of services for students with dyslexia by offering a program of instruction that can be adapted for students who need a more individualized approach to their learning. Reading by Design Program is a systematic, multisensory set of instructional routines that include content and pedagogically appropriate practices compiled from sources, such as Foundations for Literacy: Structures and Techniques for Multisensory Teaching of Basic Written English Language Skills by Aylett Royall Cox (1980). This program is aligned with research‐based practices for developing literacy and is designed for students with basic reading difficulties, such as dyslexia. This intervention follows an intensive, explicit, and cumulative design for the remediation of reading and writing skills at all grade levels. Reading by Design includes all of the components of instruction and instructional approaches supported through research as cited in The Dyslexia Handbook – Revised 2018: Procedures Concerning Dyslexia and Related Disorders (pp. 40‐41).
Teachers learn how to adapt content, methodology, and delivery of instruction (specially designed instruction) of Reading by Design: An Individualized Literacy Intervention. Teachers will learn how to adapt this program for students identified through IDEA as having the reading disability of dyslexia.
Specially designed instruction is defined under IDEA as “adapting . . . the content, methodology, or delivery of instruction” to a child eligible under IDEA. This instruction must address the unique needs of the child that result from the child’s disability and must ensure access to the general curriculum so that the child can meet the state’s educational standards (34 C.F.R §300.39(b)(3)).
In Round Rock, we surpassed our original goal of training 50 teachers. We trained 81 teachers to provide instruction across the district. At this time, Round Rock ISD has a minimum of one, trained Reading by Design trained teacher on each campus. Round Rock ISD was fortunate enough to train one of our district Dyslexia Program Specialists, Ashli Framjee to be our In-District Reading by Design Trainer. Adding an In-District trainer will allow Round Rock to sustain the use of Reading by Design year to year.
Dyslexia Instructional News & Information
Let's Celebrate!!
Dyslexia Instructional Program Completion
In this school year, 23 Round Rock ISD students completed all steps or lessons of their Dyslexia Instructional program! This is a huge accomplishment for our students who have practiced diligence over the past few years to learn and apply skills to improve their reading and spelling. We are sending a "heart-felt" THANK YOU to the campus dyslexia teachers who have tirelessly worked to make this achievement possible.
For Your Information ...
Dyslexia Program Concepts
Did you know that dyslexia programs used in our district are not designed to teach concepts from easiest to hardest? Dyslexia Instructional programs are designed to teach students the most commonly occurring patterns, in reading and spelling, first. In addition, it is best practice that students complete ALL steps or lessons in their dyslexia program.
