Greetings New Hope High School Champions and Families
Hello December!
End of Semester Update – Time to Focus on Credits
As we approach the end of the first semester, students are either making progress toward their credits or falling behind. It's a crucial time, and we strongly recommend sitting down with your New Hope High School Champion to discuss how they’re doing and what their plan is moving forward. Unfortunately, the current data is not in our favor.
Here are some key facts about our Champions’ progress:
Over 60% of students are missing at least 1 English credit. This means that 3 out of 5 students are not keeping up with their English class or credit recovery courses.
1 out of 4 students is missing at least 1 Social Studies credit, with some students missing more than one.
Over 87% of students are missing a math credit. More than 4 out of 5 students are behind in more than half of their required math credits.
Approximately 2 out of 5 students are missing at least 1 Science credit.
This data paints a concerning picture for those students hoping to walk across the stage on Sunday, May 18, 2025, to receive their diploma.
We urge you to sit down with your New Hope Champion to discuss their plan for getting back on track. If needed, make an appointment with us in the office so we can review their progress and outline a path forward. Don’t wait until the end of the year—it could be costly in terms of time and credit recovery.
Let’s work together to ensure a strong finish to this semester and set all of our students up for success.
Much Love,
Gina Hutchins
CELL PHONES
At New Hope High School, we want to ensure that all students are focused on learning and making the most of their time in class. As part of this effort, we have a clear policy regarding cell phones: Students are not allowed to have their phones visible or be using them inside any classroom. Once students enter a classroom, phones must be put away. To help with this, all teachers will provide a designated space where phones can be stored during class time.
Cell phones have become a significant disruption to the learning environment, distracting students from using their time productively, including recovering credits for graduation. Starting December 2, students who are found with their phones out—whether they are using them or not—in the classroom, hallways, or bathrooms during teaching time will face consequences for violating this rule.
While students are currently allowed to check their phones while walking between classes, this privilege may be revoked if we continue to see an increase in tardiness.
Our goal is to help students develop the skills necessary for success, both academically and in the workplace. This includes following rules, respecting dress codes, and using appropriate language. We want all students to leave New Hope High School with the skills to manage themselves responsibly and be successful in whatever they pursue after graduation.
At Home DRESS CODE Test
1. If your pants are hanging below your hips, you will be considered out of dress code.
**QUICK FIX -
Wear a belt.
2. If you raise your hands in the air and you can see any skin around the midsection, you will be considered out of dress code.
**QUICK FIX
If you want to wear the shirt wear a tank top that can be tucked in. If your shirt rises, the tank top is seen, not your skin. Its a WIN - WIN.
3. If you sit down with your knees bent at 90 degrees, place your cell phone at the edge of your knee, any holes above the phone, you will be considered out of dress code. If its a skirt or shorts, they are too short to be worn at school, you will be considered out of dress code.
**QUICK FIX
Find black leggings/tights to wear under your jeans. Or get creative and wear some colorful/patterned tights. Save the short skirts/shorts for after you get home from school.
4. If you are wearing leggings/tights, and your shirt doesn't cover pelvic girdle, otherwise the shirt doesn't reach the tips of your fingers when standing, you could be considered out of dress code.
**QUICK FIX
Save the pants for later, wear them under some jeans with holes or under a cute skirt. Or save them for when school is out.
5. If your shirt has a design on it, check to make sure it is appropriate for school by asking these questions: Does it sponsor an alcoholic beverage, a company that sells or produces products that are illegal to consume? Would you be allowed to go to church or an elementary school with the design or saying on the shirt? If "No", "I don't know" or "Maybe", then you will be more than likely considered out of dress code.
**QUICK FIX
Save it for when you are hanging out with friends or when you leave school.
In general, most jobs and institutions require a dress code, and these codes can vary depending on the environment. School, for example, is one place where students can learn the importance of following rules and demonstrating their ability to adhere to guidelines. Everyone owns some type of clothing that may be restricted at school, and over time, we learn to recognize what’s appropriate and what isn’t.
Wherever we go, we are making an impression, whether it’s on a future coworker, employer, or peer. It’s essential to make a positive first impression, as you rarely get a second chance to undo a poor one. Following the dress code at school not only shows that you can follow directions, but it also helps prepare you for the professional environment, where your appearance often plays a key role in how others perceive you.

Apprenticeship Program Opportunity
New Mexico Rural Water Association (NMRWA) has a two (2) year Water/Wastewater Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP). We help train water and/or wastewater apprentices to attain their Level 2 operator certification to operate water and/or wastewater treatment plants. Apprentices work alongside a mentor and do most classes online. For more information regarding our program see the flyer (below).
To qualify, applicants must be at least 18 years old, have a valid driver’s license, graduated from high school, or have a GED and be physically capable of performing the essential functions of the apprenticeship program, with or without a reasonable accommodation, and without posing a direct threat to the health and safety of the individual or others.
To graduate from this program, the apprentice must complete:
- At least 4000 OJT hours from the Water or Wastewater Treatment Plant employer
- Earn 4 satisfactory evaluations from a mentor (one every 6-months) from employer
- At least 288 RTI (Related Technical Instruction) class hours from NMRWA RAP
- Attend 4 scheduled conferences (Annual Conference in April near Albuquerque; Fall Conference in Las Cruces) from NMRWA RAP
- Pass the New Mexico Environment Department Water or Wastewater Operator Levels 1 & 2 exams.
The NMRWA RAP may be able to pay for the apprentices’ RTI class hours for the full 2 years, as long as funding remains available. At this time, funding is available.
