A Message from Principal Cutone
October 25, 2024
Dear HES Parents and Caregivers,
This week has been a heartfelt one for all of us as we continue to reflect on the loss of our colleague Shannon Hubbard and her baby, Maggie. In the midst of our sorrow, however, your elementary Sharks have been a bright light, bringing energy, joy, and compassion into our school. Their kindness and empathy for each other truly amaze me every day.
One of my favorite moments each morning is sharing announcements with our 4th graders. Two students join me in my office, and together we share the day’s weather, lunch menu, birthdays, reading achievements, and “filled fish bowls.” It’s also a chance for us to focus on our school-wide social-emotional learning goal, which is currently building a Growth Mindset. This week, we discussed how every expert starts as a beginner, helping students understand that practice, and sometimes making mistakes, are essential to growth.
As our student ambassadors prepared for next week’s All Shark Meeting, they had to work through the absence of a friend and leader in their skit. With impressive flexibility, they decided, “Hey, look at what a growth mindset we have! We’re being flexible and making it work.” Their positive attitude is a reminder of how resilient and adaptable our students can be.
It is truly a gift to work with your children, and I am grateful for the trust you place in us. As always, please reach out if you have any questions or concerns. I am here to listen and support in any way I can.
Warm regards,
Christie

Notes from the Nurse
We are seeing a lot of students in the nursing office. We have seen a lot of upset stomachs and a few cases of pneumonia in the past two weeks. Please remind your children to cover their coughs, to drink lots of water (or other healthy drinks), and to wash their hands. If they are vomiting, have diarrhea, or a fever greater than 100.4 they need to stay home for 24 hours after these symptoms subside. Fevers should be below 100.4 without fever reducing medication.
We have had a problem with the online Health History Forms and the Over The Counter consent for administration forms. We will be sending a paper copy home with each student on Monday. Please take the time to fill them out and return them to us ASAP. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in this matter.
Have a great weekend together!
Important Safety Information
We love to have special grownups volunteering and visiting Harwich Elementary School. For the safety of all, please call the office to ensure that your Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) is on file and up to date. If you need to submit a new CORI, please note that it can take up to a week to process. The security check is valid for three calendar years. Thank you!

Harwich Elementary School Council
We look to build a strong School Council this year to guide our important work. A School Council is a representative, school building-based committee that meets quarterly and is composed of the principal, parents, teachers, community members, and students. School Councils are tasked to assist principals in:
Adopting educational goals for the school that are consistent with local educational policies and statewide student performance standards
Identifying the educational needs of students attending the school
Reviewing the annual school building budget
Formulating a school improvement plan
Reviewing the student handbook
If you are interested please send an email message to principal Christie Cutone at ccutone@monomoy.edu indicating your interest in serving on the school council.
