PRINCIPAL'S WELCOME
Dear Vickers Students and Families,
Welcome! Bienvenue! The first weeks of school are an exciting time for both the staff and students. I want to wish you a warm welcome to the 2024-25 school year at École Vickers Public School.
We are very excited that our Outdoor Learning Classroom and Developmental Education area had new turf installed this summer! Thank you to the SCC and our wonderful Vickers community for your generous donations during our fundraisers. We are still waiting for new locking scooter racks which will keep our front entry space tidy and welcoming.
Saskatchewan Rivers Public School Division is committed to literacy and “Excellence for Every Learner.” The staff at Vickers are dedicated to literacy and have high expectations for our students. When the Vickers staff met in August, our grounding activity was focused on how to build meaningful relationships with our students. Everyone made a commitment which we have proudly displayed in our staff room.
We have a new school goal this year with the focus on READING! The theme this year is “Snap into Success: Keep the Streak Going!” and we will be working on high impact strategies to become better readers. We love having our families supporting our school goal, so stay tuned for upcoming events!
The partnership we develop with you, the parents, is crucial to your child’s success. We always appreciate your input so please feel free to call us or come by for a visit to share your thoughts and questions. The primary way to communicate with your child’s teacher is through EDSBY. This is also where you will find all information regarding your child’s learning journey such as assignments, assessments, report card, and booking parent-teacher conferences.
École Vickers School is a vibrant community with many opportunities for our students. Our staff work hard to connect with our students outside of the classroom and are already busy organizing many athletic events, clubs, and activities. We hope students get involved in the many opportunities available for them.
We also have a wonderful School Community Council that offers a great opportunity for parents to get involved in the life of the school. Stay tuned to social media and EDSBY about the upcoming SCC meetings.
Talking about social media . . please follow École Vickers on Facebook and Instagram to stay up to date with activities and events around the school as well as seeing our students engaging in learning throughout the year!
I wish everyone a successful 2024-25 school year filled with many fun and engaging learning opportunities in a safe and welcoming school environment where all learners are supported and successful.

VICKERS VOICES
WEAR ORANGE
Both the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day take place on September 30th.
Orange Shirt Day is an Indigenous-led grassroots commemorative day that honours the children who survived residential schools and remembers those who did not. This day relates to the experience of Phyllis Webstad, a Northern Secwepemc (Shuswap) from the Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation, on her first day of school, where she arrived dressed in a new orange shirt, which was taken from her. It is now a symbol of the stripping away of culture, freedom and self-esteem experienced by Indigenous children over generations.
On September 30, we encourage all Canadians to wear orange to raise awareness of the very tragic legacy of residential schools, and to honour the thousands of Survivors.

MUSIC MAKING AT VICKERS
Welcome back to another great year of music-making at Vickers!
We have so many exciting things planned for this year. Band and choir trip planning are underway, with the Grade 5 Band going to Camp Kinasao in May for an overnight band camp and concert, the Grade 6 Band going to Saskatoon in June for a clinic at the University of Saskatchewan and a fun experience at Clip n Climb, the Grade 7 Band going to Regina in June for a clinic at the University of Regina and a fun trip to Activate Games, the choir going to Moose Jaw in May for the Moose Jaw Band and Choral Festival plus a trip through the Tunnels of Moose Jaw, and the Grade 8 Band going to Calgary in May for a tour of the National Music Centre and a Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra concert as well as a trip to Activate Games. All of these trips are overnight, optional (though encouraged), and come at an additional cost per student. If you are interested in working a bingo to defray the cost of your child’s trip (or even eliminate it altogether!), contact Ms. Lohneis on Edsby.
Students in Grade 4-8 can sign up for choir. Rehearsals are on Tuesdays and Thursdays at lunch recess throughout the school year, with performance opportunities for the group at various times through the year. We are planning to sing O Canada at a Raider game this December, perform at the PA Music Festival in March, and perform at the Moose Jaw Band & Choral Festival in May. If your child likes to sing, send them my way!
Stay tuned to Edsby for updates on trips, open band room practice schedule, Music Festival registration information, and anything else pertinent to your child’s music education at Vickers. Thanks for your support, and let’s enjoy what amazing things are bound to be in store for us this year in the Vickers Music Department and beyond.

The fee is $10.75 for Kindergarten and $21.00 for Gr 1-8 & Dev Ed.
PEDESTRIAN SAFETY
Our staff parking lots are a “no drop off zone” as they are out of bounds for students.
We urge parents to support us in this safety endeavor by dropping off your children on the west side of the school on Olive Diefenbaker Drive; on Bradbury Drive, east of the Special Needs bus zone and between Gisi Road and Olive Diefenbaker Drive.
We encourage the children to cross all streets in a safe manner by crossing at the corner or at cross walks. Teacher supervision is also provided at our major crosswalks.
The Community Club rink parking lot is the bus pick up zone after school for our parents to meet their children for pick up. Please refrain from turning around in the driveways, as this is disruptive to the homeowners.
LUNCHBOX!

Tuesday will be (Edo), Thursday will be (OPA! of Greece) and Friday will be (Taco time).
