KEY NEWS FOR EXPLORER FAMILIES
It is time for School Governance Council Elections: Please check your email for the voting links for our Northwood School Governance Council positions. The electronic voting process is seamless and quick and completed through the link provided in the email. The election window is April 17 through April 24. FAQs below:
- How Will Parents Vote? Parents will receive a unique link in their email address that is on file with the district. This link will allow parents to vote directly for their school candidates.
- Multiple Schools? No Problem! If you have a child at multiple schools, don’t worry! Parents will receive unique links to the same email address based on each student. For example, if you have a child at multiple schools, you will receive one email with a unique link that allows you to vote for each SGC.
- Teacher Voting: Teachers will receive a link to vote via their FCS district email.
- No Paper Ballots: We will not provide paper ballots for the elections. However, if you need assistance with updating your email address (or setting up one), please contact your school.
- Missing Email Address? If you don’t have an email address on file, please reach out to your school’s data clerk to provide updated information.
- Translation Options: The election ballot will be translated into different language options for parents.
CALENDAR UPDATE from FCS: Pending approval at the April 25 Board meeting, Tuesday, May 21, may be set as a remote learning day to allow for district schools to be used as state election polling sites. State law requires schools to permit voting when requested by the Fulton County Department of Registrations and Elections. On May 21, 49 schools will host elections with a large number of public visitors on campus, creating concerns about student and staff safety. District administration is working with schools to create alternative plans for student activities already scheduled at schools that will be polling sites. The Board will vote on this calendar change at the April 25 Board meeting.
Last Friday was the last All Pro Dads meeting of the school year and today was the last PTA sponsored themed morning event. We are so fortunate to have Mr. Chaffer & Mr. Asher along with their dedicated team prepare and host all of the APD meetings throughout the year. The PTA Engagement committee also enjoyed planning and presenting the craft event mornings. For each of those fun and unique events our cafeteria staff also worked hard to prep yummy breakfasts. Thank you to all!
This morning, we also welcomed more than 40 future Northwood Explorers at our Kindergarten Round Up. The kindergarten team and Ms. Evangelista put together a wonderful morning; the students got a glimpse into what kindergarten will look like next year.
One final reminder about carpool process. Drivers should not exit the vehicle; staff will assist with doors as needed. Also, the carpool lane is a single lane – earlier this week a few cars were seen passing parked cars creating safety concerns for our young students.
With gratitude,
Heather Rucker
TAG EXPLORERS
This week, the 2nd Grade TAG students were excited to put their solar ovens to the test. Students discussed the meaning of multiple vocabulary words surrounding this science experiment including heat transfer, reflection, absorption, convection and insulation. They then built the ovens utilizing a box, aluminum foil and plastic wrap. Monday provided a sunny day to put the ovens outside and they were able to successfully heat up the marshmallows to make some smores to enjoy.
MARCH PBIS CELEBRATION
One of the students' favorite parts of the day, no matter what grade level they are, is recess! Before we took off for Spring Break the students celebrated their positive behavior choices for the month of March with some Extra Recess! Extra Recess is a favorite because students get more time to interact with their peers, get extended time outside and they get more exercise!
FIELD DAY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Northwood Elementary is having its annual Field Day on Monday, May 13, 2024. We are seeking parent volunteers to help facilitate Field Day events. Grades 2, 3, 5 will have Field Day from 8:30 am-10:30 am. Grades K, 1, 4, AU will have Field Day from 11:45 am-1:45 pm. Please click here for more details and to sign up. We appreciate your time and look forward to the fun. Thanks!

NATIONAL CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH
April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. The theme this year is “Building a Hopeful Future, Together.” Strong support systems help families thrive! Support can come from family, friends, neighbors, and others in the community. Together we can strengthen families and prevent child abuse and together we can make it easier for families to access support services and learn how to identify and build on family strengths. By providing all families with equal opportunity and access to the support they need, we can help improve the safety and well-being of children and youth across the country. GET READY FOR GEORGIA MILESTONES
What can I do to help my child prepare?
Be certain your child gets plenty of sleep and has a healthy breakfast.
Be certain your student is at school on time, so they are not worried about being late.
Remind students that cell phones and smart watches will be collected and stored in the secure testing room during test administration times. It’s best for students to leave them at home if possible.
Please have students bring their fully charged device every day.
Get information and practice using this link: Georgia Milestones Resources (gadoe.org)
Experience the online testing session. See below for more details, and use this link: www.gaexperienceonline.com
What happens if my child is absent?
- There will be rolling make-ups throughout the testing window. Please do not send your child in if they are sick.
Can visitors be in the building?
- During GMAS testing, we will not be allowing visitors in the building before 11:30 am; and there will also be no lunch visitors these days.
Georgia Experience Online
Georgia Experience Online is a practice site that can be used for students to learn more about the structure and content of the Georgia Milestones Assessment, experience online testing, and practice using online testing tools. Parents are welcome to explore this site and use to practice with your child.
Please note that the EOG Test Practice site will have ELA and Math questions while the EOG Study Guide for Students and Parents only focuses on Math and Science (5th grade only).
Below you will find an attachment with directions and the link to access the site. Please contact your child’s teacher or our CST, Danielle Evangelista if you have any questions.
