FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK
Dear Edison Families,
We are entering the time of year when we make our final push to recruit fantastic new families to join the Edison community and we need your help!
For our dual-language program to succeed, it's essential that we enroll a balanced number of Spanish and English-speaking students in PreK, TK, and Kindergarten. While we receive many applications from English-speaking families interested in bilingual education, we’ve seen a decrease in applications from Spanish-speaking families. This isn’t because our program isn’t a great fit for Spanish-speaking families, but rather because the demographics in our neighborhood are changing and there is a lack of understanding about how our model works and the unique benefits it offers.
Here’s why our dual-language program is especially beneficial for Spanish-speaking students:
- Bilingual and Biliterate: Students in our program will not only speak two languages, but they will also read and write at a high academic level in both languages.
- Cultural Affirmation: Our program celebrates and affirms students’ cultural backgrounds, elevating the Spanish language and the rich traditions of those who speak it. Students of Hispanic heritage will see their identities reflected in both the curriculum and the school community.
- Higher English Proficiency: Spanish-speaking students at Edison score higher in English than their peers at other schools. This may seem surprising since our students spend part of their day learning in Spanish, but it’s because we teach with a focus on language transfer. By leveraging Spanish as an asset, we help students build strong connections between both languages. Our highly skilled teachers ensure that every moment of English instruction is meaningful and impactful.
PLEASE HELP US SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT OUR PROGRAM TO SPANISH-SPEAKING FAMILIES THAT LIVE OR WORK IN SANTA MONICA!
You can share information directly, or pass along our digital recruitment flyer below. Together, we can raise awareness, help students thrive, and ensure that our program continues to grow and succeed.
Thank you for your support!
Gratefully,
Directora Ipiña
