The Buzz
Spring Term - 16th January 2025
Message from the Head of School
Dear Parents/Carers,
The spring term is in full swing with many visits, events and clubs starting this week. This month's principle is independence and throughout their HPP journey a value that we continue to build on. Independence in class involves building their capacity to think for themselves and work with other pupils to problem solve. Around the school this can take many forms including solving friendship issues or using your initiative when making decisions. We want our children to become independent thinkers so do encourage this principle at home.
The whole school competition this term is the 'times tables challenge'. The children will complete various rounds over the coming week using TTRockstars with the final taking place on Friday 14th February. This competition is a great opportunity for the children to really focus on this vital skill and apply their learning in a fun way! Please encourage your children to practise at home and reinforce the importance of this maths skill.
In the Buzz this week we have included information about the RSPB Bird watch event. This is a brilliant opportunity for our children to spend time outside looking at and appreciating our local environment. The Big Garden Bird watch is also something families can take part in at home. Please see the information and link below.
Finally, our year 6 SATs information meeting takes place virtually on Wednesday 22nd at 4pm. I hope to see many parents join this session run by the year 6 teacher: https://meet.google.com/kqz-fxvh-ndd
I hope you all have a lovely weekend.

Messages from the office
Visiting HJS - Drinks on site
May we request that if you are coming into school to view your child's work, watch an assembly, showcase etc that you do not bring drinks to the school site for health and safety reasons. Thank you
Medical/dental appointments
Don't forget to send in confirmation of appointment if your child is absent during the day for a medical/dental appointment. This makes it easier to code your child's absence correctly. As per our policy we would be grateful if appointments where possible could be made outside of school hours.
NHS Pharmacy First Service
Did you know that the NHS Pharmacy First Service enables children and adults to get convenient access to healthcare advice and treatment where appropriate, for seven common conditions without the potential delay of having to wait for a GP appointment? Accessing the service may mean that we can help children feel better and get back to school as quickly as possible, as well as supporting parents/carers to also get better if they are unwell with one of the conditions covered under the service.
There is no need to make an appointment; parents or carers can pop into their local Boots pharmacy with their child and ask for help under the service.
Support for the following conditions can be accessed under the service, free of charge (unless NHS prescription charges apply):
Earache (aged 1 to 17 years)
Impetigo (aged 1 year and over)
Infected insect bites and stings (aged 1 year and over)
Sore throats (aged 5 years and over)
Sinusitis (aged 12 years and over)
Uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) in women (aged 16 to 64 years)
Shingles (aged 18 years and over)
RSPB- The Big Garden Birdwatch 2025
We are excited to introduce an initiative that combines nature, learning and outdoor adventure—The Big Garden Birdwatch. This initiative encourages students to explore the diverse bird species around our school grounds, fostering a deeper appreciation for local wildlife and the environment. Whether you're an experienced birdwatcher or a beginner, this is a fantastic opportunity to get outside, observe and connect with nature in a fun and educational way.
Why should we take part?
Across the UK, over 600,000 people took part in Big Garden Birdwatch 2024, counting a whopping 9.7 million birds! House Sparrows took the top spot, but counts of these chirpy birds are down by 60% compared to the first Birdwatch in 1979. In fact, we’ve lost 38 million birds from UK skies in the last 60 years. With birds facing so many challenges, it’s more important than ever to get involved in the Birdwatch. Every bird you do – or don’t – count will give us a valuable insight into how garden birds are faring.
Taking part:
Within school, the children will be taking part in the Big Schools' Birdwatch between 7th January and 14th February 2025. They will be spending time outside birdwatching and creating a tally of the different birds that they see. This will then be collated and submitted to the RSPB.
If you would like to take part at home, please find the link to further information and resources below:
Hampton Library
During the spring term, lots of classes will be heading to Hampton library. To be able to take home books during this trip, children will need to have a library card. If your child does not have a library card, please fill in the form and hand to your class teacher. The card can then be set up at the library during the trip.
