STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT
Échange Française
On May 21, 7th and 8th grade Honors French students took part in the Échange Française. This event invites Middle school French students to visit the high school to learn about the program and build community between High School and Middle School students. High School students taught and led activities and games in French to the Middle schoolers.
Congrats on a Great eSports Season!
Great Job to the Fernwood eSports team who made it to the New Jersey State Finals for their 4th time in 2 years! The team was undefeated in Super Smash Bros. 2v2 and faced off against Burnet Middle School in Union City who was also undefeated. Liam Varela and Logan Grote played hard in a best of 5 series, but unfortunately weren't able to take the state title. Coaches Lee and Ayars are proud of all the hard work and dedication the team put in this season. Special Recognition is needed for Liam Varela who has competed in his last Middle School State Final since he will be moving on to the High School after this year. Thank you Liam for all the work you've put in for this team and we will all miss you as you go on to do bigger and better things!
The Garden State eSports State Finals were held at Stockton University this past weekend on May 18 and included teams from over 32 high schools and middle schools from all across NJ that competed in Super Smash Bros., Rocket League, and Valorant. There are 3 seasons per school year (Fall, Winter, Spring) that schools are able to compete in with different events being offered per season.
Another Record Falls
A big congratulations to Jahiyd Mcclellan for breaking the school record for the 100m with a time of 11.5 seconds! Great job Jahiyd!

Orchestras Headed Up to Broadway
The Fernwood & Alder Ave. Midde School’s Orchestras headed up to Broadway to see MJ The Musical! Afterwards they had a post show-dinner where they were able to meet, have dinner and ask questions with the show’s on-stage drummer Andrew Atkinson!
Farewell Lessons with Mr. Mento
As the year is coming to an end, Mrs. Mento will be conducting a final farewell classroom lesson to all 8th grade pods during Social Studies periods. Mrs. Mento will be meeting with Gold Pod students on 5/24; Red Pod students during the first week in June, and Blue Pod students on 6/12. Students will reflect on their time spent at Fernwood and write letters to the incoming 6th graders for next year. Mrs. Mento will share their advice and wisdom with the new Fernwood students in the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year.
