Raven Report
November News
By: Duncan, Weston, Logan
In the month of November, many important events happened, including: parent teacher interviews, the Remembrance Day ceremony, the fall break, and Sr. Basketball Team tryouts!
Parent Teacher Interviews
The Parent Teacher Interviews took place on November 5th and November 6th. This is a good opportunity for parents to learn more about how their children’s school year is going.
Remembrance Day Ceremony
The Remembrance Day Ceremony took place on November 8th, we recognized the sombre occasion early because November 11th was during the fall break. During this ceremony, everyone in the school mourned and honoured the fallen soldiers who served our country and fought for our freedom. We had multiple student speakers educate us about the history of Remembrance Day by reading stories and poems including, “In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae read by Summer Honey and Jayme-Lynn Thomas.
Fall Break
The fall break took place from November 8th to November 18th. All students and staff were given a week off of school for the purpose of reducing school work stress, promoting mental health, and academic success. Many went on vacation and had a very relaxing week. Soon though school kicked right back up again and everyone went back to learning quicker and better than ever because of the break!
RHJ Sports
The Senior Boys Basketball tryouts were on November 26th and again on the 28th of November. They are going to be coached by Mr. Jason Quick. The Sr. Girls Basketball tryouts were the 25th and the 27th. Their coaches are Stacy Reid and Ashley Dach. Junior teams are going to have to wait until December for their tryouts because their season starts later. The first games for senior teams will also be next month. There is a tournament in Ardrossan on the 13th of December.
The Sr. Girls Volleyball team’s season is coming to an end after a rollercoaster season but ended with a record of 2 wins and 7 losses. The Jr. Girls Volleyball team had a lot of new players but managed to come out with 2 wins and 6 losses . The Jr. Boys Volleyball team tried their best but came out with 0 wins and 8 losses. Thank you to all the volleyball coaches for coming out and coaching our teams.
Thanks for reading. Have a great December. Our next issue will be published at the end of next month.

Has your contact information recently changed?
Have you recently moved or has your contact information changed since the start of the year? RHJ encourages families to review the information the Division has on file to ensure it’s up to date. Using the Student Information Update available through the PowerSchool Parent Portal, families can review the current information on file for each student—including addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, parent and guardian information, emergency contacts, medical details and other related information—and submit any updates needed.
Reviewing and updating the form ensures the school and Division have the most up-to-date information regarding your child. Updates completed by December 10 are especially helpful as the Division prepares for 2025-26 registration processes beginning in the new year.
NOTE: Only submit updates for the changes that have already taken place. If you’re moving later this school year, you’ll submit the necessary updates to your information through the Student Information Update after you’ve moved.
If you have questions about the form or any trouble with your Parent Portal account, contact the school office at 780-998-2216

Share Your Thoughts on Budget Planning for 2025-26
Alberta Education allocates funds to school boards to fulfill their delegated responsibilities of providing education programs for students in kindergarten to Grade 12. As part of Elk Island Public Schools’ (EIPS) commitment to stakeholder engagement and to continue allocating resources according to local priorities, the Division conducts an annual budget planning survey to seek input from staff, families Grade 12 students and community partners.
The survey is voluntary, anonymous and takes about five to 10 minutes to complete. The survey questions suggest possible budget areas for EIPS to focus its resources, which align with the Division’s current Four-Year Education Plan. If you believe there are other areas where the Division should concentrate its resources, you can also indicate what these are. EIPS will consider all budget planning input to guide future decision-making.
COMPLETE THE SURVEY NOW
Survey closes Dec 18, 2024
Grade 12 students will complete the survey at school.
Thank you for sharing your input to help inform Division planning.
Fee Waiver Application Deadline
If circumstances exist where you’re unable to pay school or transportation fees, you can apply to have fees waived by submitting an Application for a Waiver of Fees. The application deadline is Dec. 16, 2024. If you’re new to the Division, the deadline is the latter of Dec. 16, 2024, or 45 days after registration.
To access your fee information, simply log in to the PowerSchool Parent Portal and go to “Student Fees.” There you can view your fees and pay them online using Visa or MasterCard. All fees are due within 30 days of being posted.
Don’t forget to also log in to the PowerSchool Parent Portal regularly throughout the year. Fees are often added to your child’s account to cover the cost of various school activities such as field trips, class projects, extracurricular activities and more.
For more information about school fees, waivers and payment deadlines, visit www.eips.ca/schools/fees and https://www.rudolphhennig.ca/about/fees. Alternatively, contact Marg Tomkow at 780-998-2216.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from the Board of Trustees
I want to extend warm holiday wishes to all students, staff and families on behalf of the Elk Island Public Schools Board of Trustees.
We’re grateful to have school communities full of hard-working families committed to the success of their children. Education doesn’t just happen in school, it happens at home too—in every homework assignment completed, every textbook chapter read and every test reviewed. Thank you for taking the time out of your day to cultivate learning at home, so that students are eager to strive for their best at school the next day. We also appreciate the countless hours school councils put into planning events and appreciate all the people who volunteer at and attend them. Your support is invaluable.
We hope you enjoy all the holiday concerts and festivities happening at your schools, and that you get some well-deserved rest during the break. To each and every person, have a wonderful holiday season and a healthy and happy New Year.
We look forward to seeing everyone back at school on Jan. 8, 2024.
Merry Christmas and happy holidays,
Cathy Allen
EIPS Board Chair
Spread the Word: EIPS is Hiring!
Do you know someone who may be interested in part-time, flexible work as a substitute educational assistant or substitute teacher in the specialty areas of French Immersion or CTS/CTF? Elk Island Public Schools is hiring. Spread the word!
Substitute teaching and non-teaching staff are critical to filling planning and unexpected vacancies when Division staff are away. Substitutes are needed to fill various positions at all school locations until the end of the school year. Upcoming application deadlines are December 12 and 13. If you know someone who’d be great in this role, encourage them to apply today.
Did you know?
Alberta’s publicly funded systems—public, Catholic and francophone—serve the educational interests of almost 720,000 kindergarten to Grade 12 students across the province. Funding diverted to alternative educational institutions, both for infrastructure and programming, negatively impacts the public system’s ability to provide comprehensive, equitable, accessible and mandated programming for 90 per cent of the province’s students.
Lunchbox
Rudolph Hennig has joined with LunchBox to offer lunches for our students! Parents can order and pay online through the link below, and students pick up the lunches in the Raven's Nest Store in the first half of lunch.
LunchBox also brings some additional items to sell to students.
About Us
Welcome to the home of the Ravens! We support personal development and academic growth for all of our students.
Rudolph Hennig Junior High School honours Treaty 6 territory and welcomes students from Metis settlements and First Nations communities throughout Western Canada and the Northwest Territories. We strive to build a safe and caring environment where cultural practices and traditions are honoured and celebrated. We work closely with community Elders to bring the truth of Canada’s history to our students as we work towards shared reconciliation.
We hope your year with us will be an enjoyable, rewarding, and memorable experience. Rudolph Hennig’s staff are committed to ensuring all students achieve success.
